TikiTag brings Web 2.0 Tagging to the Real World with RFID Tagging System!

Tikitag RFID tags

Tikitag RFID tags

Tikitags are the new revolutionary RFID tags that will change our lives forever through real-life tagging, similar to Web2.0 tagging revolution and blogs.

Basically, you will be able to apply these RFID tags to anything anywhere and also connect them online.

I really like this idea as there’s an inifinite amount of applications and stuff you can think of using with the Tikitags.

I am sure more companies will be creating similar real-world tagging systems that can be connected back online but this one really is the first for us regular consumers.

Press Release:

Demo Conference, San Diego, September 8, 2008 - Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced that Alcatel-Lucent Ventures has debuted tikitagsm, a consumer service, at the DEMO Conference in San Diego. tikitag, leveraging innovations within Bell Labs, enables consumers and third-party application developers to increase the value of everyday items by connecting them to online content or applications. The technology that tikitag takes advantage of to establish this connection is Near Field Communications Technology (NFC) - an evolution of RFID that connects electronic devices over short distances. The market for NFC is expected to grow significantly in the coming years. Market consultancy Strategy Analytics projects that by 2012 around 250 million NFC-enabled phones will be sold worldwide.

The tikitag service enables the launching of online applications by simply touching an NFC device such as a cell phone to an item tagged with an NFC chip. tikitag can be used in a variety of environments: for example in an in-home application a father can use tikitag to link his toddler’s teddy bear to an online story about that same bear; in an outdoor environment tikitag makes it possible for a visitor to an art gallery to wave his NFC enabled mobile phone at a painting and then see the painter’s Wikipedia profile appear on the phone’s screen; or in a business/logistics environment a cleaning company can, for example, use it to record that a room has been successfully cleaned through a simple touch of an NFC-enabled mobile phone to a tikitag-linked NFC tag that has been placed in the room

tikitag will be offered as a beta starter package on Oct. 1 through e-commerce Web sites. The package will include a USB-enabled NFC reader and electronic tags, and provide access to a community website where users can create and share new and off-the-shelf tikitag applications. Initial applications available for download include the ability to link tags to URLs or linking tagged souvenirs to photo albums. Teenagers will be able to link a tagged photo to their social network profile at Netlog® or steer an online music services player to perform pre- programmed actions via a tikitagged object. “Sharing gadgets and things linked to your social network profile can enhance both the online and real world experience of communities,” said Lorenz Bogaert, CEO of Netlog, Europe’s leading social portal

“Over the last few years there has been explosive growth in the range and types of online content – much of it related to real world objects, events or activities,” said Anthony Belpaire, General Manager of Alcatel-Lucent’s tikitag venture. “but how do you connect this online content with a person’s business card, for example, or a concert poster, or a work of art, etc….tikitag provides this missing link,” he added.

“The goal of DEMO is to introduce a broad audience to cutting edge ideas. tikitag is sure to get people excited about novel ways to integrate the Internet and online applications with physical items,” said Chris Shipley, DEMO executive producer

tikitag features a flexible API that will enable third parties to customize and embed tikitag functionality into their offerings – either seamlessly extending their existing applications or creating new applications to enable interaction with tangible things. At the same time they can promote their applications on the tikitag website.

The NFC technology uses transmitters, called Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags, which can be easily and unobtrusively attached to virtually any object and, when activated by a reader in a mobile device or a computer, send back a unique identifying signal.

At the core of the tikitag service is the tikitag Application Correlation Server (ACS), which manages the link between an NFC tag and a corresponding action to be initiated. When an NFC-enabled device (PC, Mac or NFC enabled mobile phone) touches the NFC tag, it automatically connects with the tikitag ACS. The ACS then directs the Internet-enabled device to access the appropriate online content and applications.

Pricing and availability

Starting Oct. 1 consumers can start using tikitag by purchasing a beta tikitag starter kit that consists of an NFC reader, 10 NFC tags, and access to the tikitag community site, through third-party e-commerce Websites including Amazon.com. Beta pricing is 49.95 USD. (www.tikitag.com).

InfiniteTube is a YouTube Repeater!

InfiniteTube is a YouTube Repeater!

Here’s a cool site called InifiTube that will gather up your favorite videos tagged with a keyword and play them in “all-repeat” action like an MP3 player.

The site itself is kinda slow and it’s not up to Web2.0 standards but does have a lot of potential to grow if made faster I guess.

This site will definitely allow me to listen to constant Bob Marley which is definitely cool.

As you can see in the above graph, Craigslist gets about 50-100 times more web traffic.

Even in my own experience hiring people in my previous business ventures, I always do get more job resumes within the 24 hours period than I want.

eBay Sues Craigslist, Craigslist Counter-Sues eBay

It looks like there’s gonna be some ugly relationships between the two companies, eBay (EBAY) and Craigslist, as they are trying to sue each other.

eBay started the fight but Craig is not taking it lightly and punches back with a lawsuit.

When this is all over, I will start using eBay and Craigslist again. They both fight like pu**ies.

A few weeks back eBay brought a lawsuit against Craigslist, of which it owns an arguably sizable stake. We later learned that the reasons for eBay’s lawsuit was due to Craigslist’s steps to dilute eBay’s shares in the online classifieds company.

Now, Craigslist has responded with a filed complaint of its own, which has been filed in California. According to Craigslist’s blog, Craigslist is charging eBay with “with unlawful and unfair competition, misappropriation of proprietary information, deceptive passing-off, business interference, false advertising, phishing attacks, free-riding, trademark infringement, trademark dilution, and breaches of fiduciary duty.”

This is an embarrasement to their image, what a bunch of hoaxes!  Seriously, we need less politics and more real work in this Web2.0 world, especially with US economy going down.  Can we stop these cat fights pleeez?

Better yet, I’d like to see the CEOs of each company battle it out with real boxing gloves.

Kirix Strata is a “Killer Data Browser” - Database Management at your Fingertips!

Kirix Strata brings MySQL management to your Desktop!

Kirix, one of the companies I interviewed at the Web2.0 Expo 2008, provides a desktop MySQL database management software called Strata.

The Strata is basically built on the gecko browser platform, the same open-source platform that powers Firefox.

As you can see in the video interview, Kirix Strata lets users view, organize, and manipulate data tables with desktop speeds and ease.

Although you could make a similar webapp, it wouldn’t perform as fast since you’d have to constantly connect to a web server.

Kirix Strata solves all that, and as a programmer myself, I am impressed at how quickly you can manipulate data. (If you watch the end of the video, you will see how quickly Strata can bring is RSS feeds to a MySQL table)

Now, there’s a LOT of applications that the Strata could be used for such as organizing your web database without coding, importing your database to your desktop, manipulating the database at desktop PC speed, and tons more.

This application is really geared towards those web programmers but if you are able to get the drift, this app is amazing and seems to have a bright future.

Here’s another video better explaining the features:

Kirix™ Strata™ is a “data browser” — a fusion of a web browser and a built-in relational database. Strata brings the sensibilities and simplicity of a web browser to the world of tabular data, making it easy to access, view and use data from any source.

Strata serves as a bridge between local data files, database management systems and data on the web. You can access data from local sources and across the web, mash it together, and quickly work with it to gain new insights or create ad hoc reports to share with others.

Strata makes it possible to manipulate and analyze data in a rapid-fire, interactive manner. You can cut out a number of steps for common data-related tasks and dramatically reduce the time it takes to get the results you want. For instance, with Strata, you can:

You can download Kirix Strata and try it for 30 days here.
