Facebook threatened by Google’s Friend Connect

In a recent launch of Google’s (GOOG) Friend Connect, Facebook has banned Google’s access temporarily until Google complies to Facebook’s specifications of sharing private data.

It’s hard to tell whether Facebook will ban Google completely but I think they are really trying to protect their own privacy policies at this point.

The day that Facebook goes public, I am buying shares though.

The fact is that Google is taking perfectly adequate steps to protect user privacy with their Friend Connect product, and it is a useful product for users. After talking with both sides, it seems to me that Facebook is relying on a very convenient catch-22 to stay out of Google’s network. They are the ones in control of their own API functionality, and they could add features that fix this problem. Until they do, there’s nothing Google can do to remedy the “problem,” and the walls around the Facebook garden get ever higher.

Yahoo Search Engine Improves with Keyword Suggestions

Yahoo Search Engine Improves

Have you used Yahoo (YHOO)search engine lately?

Well, I haven’t used it honestly for couple months but I am impressed at their new real-time AJAX keyword suggestion feature.

They even have an “Explore concepts” feature, which I’d say is more towards Web 3.0 and the semantic web.

This functionality is way more advanced than Google (GOOG) at this point.   I am sure Google has something in the works to compete against Yahoo’s innovations but today I am impressed at Yahoo’s improvements.

Now, if Yahoo keeps improves their search engine algorithm a little bit or join Google to make the GooHoo thing real, that’d be the day we have some really really good search engine.

Enhanced Del.icio.us Bookmarking - Mento Launched!

Mento, a bookmarking service similar to Del.icio.us, has just launched.  The only difference Mento does is that it’s really oriented so you can “send” your bookmarks to others using Twitter and social networks.

They are using beta invites so you need an invite to try the service out.

The service does look promising but only time will tell its success.

Beyond the features typically found on tagging sites, Mento strives to simplify sharing links with friends by allowing users to import and interact with their Facebook contacts. The site also differentiates itself by keeping track of how many times a link you’ve shared has been clicked, and which members have clicked it.

Mento can be used either with bookmarklets in your browser’s toolbar or as an extension that appears as a button (available for both Firefox and IE). The extension isn’t intrusive, but it doesn’t seem to offer much extra functionality over the bookmarklet at this point (though this will likely change in the future).
