Web 2.0 Expo San Francisco is tomorrow! I will be there to take some free promotional T-shirts from various companies and see if there’s any new companies launching a cool product. Look for the guy with “Zedomax.com” T-shirt, that will most likely be me or the cute female strippers I hired.

is a working on new Web 2.0ish image tagging that basically targets to tag photos with products, sorta like Adsense Images gone Wildfly Web 2.0. We think it’s a good idea and highly suggest you to check it out too. On the side note, Google might also become one of its major investors. We see a good future ahead for Pixazza and they offer publisher programs for bloggers and alike.

The startup, staffed by Netscape veterans with a $5.75 million Series A venture capital round, on Wednesday is unveiling a service that lets Web publishers apply tags to photos on their sites—they literally look like tiny yellow-and-blue price tags. Hover your cursor over one of them, and a box appears that lists the product, such as a coat or a pair of shoes, that looks like (or actually is the same) coat or shoes in the photo. You can see the price and the retailers offering the products and click over to a retailer’s product listing.

I am starting to find that Twitter is becoming increasingly useful for people to stay in touch with its readers or even promote a new e-book. I won’t go into details about how to do that here, but David over at TeleRead.org has an extensive DIY guide on how to do exactly that.

Kat has pumped out some 5,000 Twitter updates. She subscribes to messages from more than 1,000 fellow users and has attracted more than 1,500 “followers.” I also track Tim O’Reilly, founder of O’Reilly Media, now up to 54,807 followers, still a fraction of Barack Obama’s 379,716 before the First Keyboarder apparently abandoned Twitter for more conventional media. Unlike Obama, Kat can’t hold White House news conferences.

Well, Comcast has always been on my priority list of companies that have previously failed at customer service. But I think they are getting better and better over the years and it’s good to hear they finally have a Twitter account to help twitters with their comcast problems.

Comcast has found a way to offer exceptional customer service to their consumers, but the thing that really makes them stand out is how well they monitor discontent. Complain about Comcast and you can bet you’ll hear from @comcastcares to see if they can help.

Here’s a website called Zumeo.com that you can find jobs. Basically they are the human search engines for finding you or employers jobs.

Apart from everything, I like how they designed the site.

Zumeo.com is a social networking and online recruiting site for college students, recent college grads and first year hires. Users first take a “self-discovery” test that highlights strengths and weaknesses. Zumeo partnered with career consultant Career Key to develop an assessment test to help match a user with the appropriate job. The user then creates a “Live Resume” that can be updated and shared with recruiters, friends or colleagues or even shared with other social networks like Facebook and MySpace.

Here’s a new Google gadget that you can add to your GMail account, TwitterGadget , that will keep you twittering along even while you check your e-mail. Of course, I wish there were multiple account option and I could maximize the screen as this guy tells us, (mine doesn’t have the double arrows for some reason) but this could come in handy for those of you who don’t want to cluter your desktop with Adobe Air apps such as TwitterDeck or Twhirl.

TwitterGadget is a clean, robust, web 2.0 style client for Twitter.com, designed to submit status updates to Twitter via your iGoogle homepage or Gmail Account.

TwitterGadget is completely AJAX based, meaning, at the user-specified refresh interval, only the status update content is refreshed in-line, on the gadget page. This means reduced bandwidth utilization between you and Twitter.com, while providing for a more user-friendly experience.

10 Reasons why Skype Maybe the Biggest Web 2.0 Winner!

ReadWriteWeb has an excellent list of reasons why Skype maybe the biggest Web 2.0 winner. I have to agree, the real winners are hard to tell until the end, speaking of which, is there going to be an end to Web 2.0?

It has revenue, about $500 million in 2008. Ahem, only in the strange world of Web 2.0 is that considered remarkable. I love using Twitter, but without sustainable revenue their future has to be in question.
It is profitable. We’re talking “high-teen margins,” according to eBay’s CEO at the Accel Symposium. That does put it in a different league. It means they can survive the harshest of economic climates. If Facebook is having to raise money in these markets their model must be fundamentally flawed, which means their time as an independent company maybe limited. To control your own destiny, you need to be profitable.
Skype’s growth is accelerating in a tough market. Skype is publicly talking about growth rates of 30% to 40%. That’s not bad in an economy where flat is the new 30%. Skype has the perfect recession pitch: cut costs now! This shows in its most recent numbers. In the last quarter, Donahoe told us that Skype-to-Skype grew 73% and Skype Out grew 63%.
Disruptive technology. Disruptive technology is an over-hyped term, but in this case it really fits. Skype’s peer to peer technology enables them to dramatically under-price the competition and still make money. New users don’t cost much money – compare that with Facebook and YouTube. Even better, each new user that comes on improves the service for others – the core P2P proposition.
Viral marketing. Skype is the perfect viral business. I have lost count of the number of people I have told about Skype, for the simple reason that I want to communicate better/cheaper with them. Many of them are doing the same.
Massive market with vulnerable incumbents.$2 trillion is a lot of money. That is the size of the global telecom market. As to vulnerable, how many people feel so loyal to their telephone company that they won’t switch to get lower prices? Yes, when Skype dominates the market it won’t be worth $2 trillion any more. Even if it is worth 25% of that, say $500 billion, that is OK for the dominant player. Faced with the Skype threat, incumbents have a horrible innovator’s dilemma. To really match Skype will destroy their current business even faster.
Just wait until it bites into those cell phone bills.Skype on mobile phones – really native Skype you can use for free wherever there is WiFi – has been possible technically for some time. This has been held back by the mobile operator’s head lock on the device manufacturers. At some point the damn will break. Consumers pent up anger over nickle and diming cell phone bills will ensure that a real alternative will be welcomed.
Skype is totally mainstream. This is not about being hip or early adopter. Just show the video conversation to anybody with loved ones in distant places. You will see the surprise and amazement that makes it seem like magic.
It is a sticky service. Google still gets my business because they are better than the alternatives. But switching to an alternative will be totally simple. When somebody suggests using something other than Skype, I resist. I have my contacts in there, know exactly how it works and have integrated some external tools. Skype can continually add new features to make the experience better as our hunger for communication is pretty well limitless.
Skype can do an IPO. For anyone younger than 30, we should probably spell that out: Initial Public Offering. We keep being told that the IPO market is moribund because of Sarbanes-Oxley. Baloney! The IPO market is moribund because we have lacked profitable high-growth companies that move into huge markets.

Austin Police Faker Twitter Account Suspended!

Here’s an interesting news that someone had been impersonating the Austin Police on Twitter.

Although not much of a news to me, this could be pivotal for the police officers who must deal with bs on Twitter. Well, if they use Twitter that is.

I don’t think Twitter is that popular yet but this could be start of many, many impersonations on Twitter and they can’t stop ALL of them…

After complaints from the City of Austin and the Texas attorney general’s office, the social networking site Twitter has shut down a fake account that pretended to issue Austin Police Department bulletins with official-sounding messages that included “warming up my radar gun for SXSWi.”

The “AustinPD” page had about 450 followers. It was created in 2008 and used the official City of Austin seal. The page now states that the account “has been suspended due to strange activity.”

Well, I always find some really funny ads for hire by Web 2.0 companies, here’s one:

We are a well funded startup making our premier at the Web 2.0 Expo this year. Our focus is on healthy eating and active lifestyles so we are looking for well toned (six packs are a plus) and good looking (nice smile) men and women to represent our brand. Interesting Lawsuit by Toys R Us.com LLC and Amazon.com

Here’s an interesting online case between Toys R Us.com and Amazon.com:

After a lengthy trial, the Court found that defendant Amazon.com had breached an agreement it had entered into with plaintiff ToysRUs.com LLC (”Toys R Us”), by permitting third parties to sell toys on Amazon’s web site. Finding that this breach went to the substance of the parties’ agreement – which as interpreted by the Court provided that Toys R Us was to be the sole third party toy retailer on Amazon’s web site – the Court granted Toys R Us’s request that the agreement be terminated. Notwithstanding its finding that such a breach had occurred, the Court did not award Toys R Us damages. The Court also rejected counterclaims asserted by Amazon, arising out of Toys R Us’s alleged failure to maintain levels of inventory sufficient to meet customer demand.

WPTUT – Wordpress Tutorials Social Networking Site Launched!

A Wordpress Tutorial site called WPTut.com was launched last week (in secret) by one of my friends Jason from Blogtomic.com.

He created a social networking site completely from a Wordpress blog so it’s kinda cool in that sense. If you’ve got some Wordpress tutorial, you should submit them here.

I had the pleasure of being the first user on his new site, thanks Jason!

Here’s the details about the site:

How it works:
You can sign up add tutorials or save tutorials to your favs, vote, comment and search tutorials. You also get a profile page when you submit tutorials that list your tutorials and information. Also you can also submit tutorials as a guest if you prefer. All tutorials are a link back to your site, no tutorial is actually hosted on the WPTUT site.

WPTUT – Wordpress Tutorials Social Networking Site Launched!

Gawker Media Blog Network Reaches 297 PageViews Per Month!

One of the most interesting blog networks (and one of the earliest blog start-ups) is Gawker Network. They are probably the 1st or the 2nd biggest blog network in the world as far as number of pageviews.

They have just reached a record 297 Million pageviews for the month of October. (In contrast, Zedomax Blog Network reaches about 1-2 Million pageviews)

Congratulations to Gawker and blog networks like this keep the mainstream media from taking over the blogsphere. There’s been a lot of rumors that blogging is dying and that individual bloggers will not be able to overcome the takeover of mainstream media (such as CNN) but this proves that blogs are growing and democracy of blogsphere will be maintained in the future.

Gawker Media Blog Network Reaches 297 PageViews Per Month!

Google Korea buys Korean version of Wordpress!

Google Korea buys TnC, a blogging software company who has been making blogging software similar to Wordpress. (Basically a Korean version of Wordpress). I have personally tried their software and it is not bad to say the least.

Just like Google bought Blogspot, this might be a sign that blogging in Korea has just started. As far as I know, South Koreans has a long history of community blogging, they have yet to develop as commercial blogs. (Perhaps they are a little behind in that arena but don’t be fooled, South Koreans have their own “Wordpress” per-say and that’s just only one of the companies making a blog software.

Wordpress still leads and will keep leading the world’s blogging software platform but great buys like this will allow Google to re-create their own Wordpress market, starting with a beta test in South Korea. (I think they are testing the grounds before doing something similar in the U.S.)

I think this is a good move on Google’s part as their advertising network of Adsense and AdWords truly go hand-in-hand with blogging.

Even better than Google’s Blogspot deal, this TnC deal will be taking over the actual open-source blogging platform, not a website.

SearchMe is a Visual Search Engine sorta like iPod Touch and iPhones!

I recently ran into a cool visual search site called SearchMe that lets you search visually using screenshots of search results. It’s really iPod Touch/iPhone browsing applied to a search engine.

The service works pretty fast and it’s pretty neat. I might not use it on regular basis but it seems to have a big future.

For being a good search engine, we gave it our “Web3.0″ tag.

They even have YouTube search, check out this video:

The technology that tikitag takes advantage of to establish this connection is Near Field Communications Technology (NFC) – an evolution of RFID that connects electronic devices over short distances. The market for NFC is expected to grow significantly in the coming years. Market consultancy Strategy Analytics projects that by 2012 around 250 million NFC-enabled phones will be sold worldwide.

The tikitag service enables the launching of online applications by simply touching an NFC device such as a cell phone to an item tagged with an NFC chip. tikitag can be used in a variety of environments: for example in an in-home application a father can use tikitag to link his toddler’s teddy bear to an online story about that same bear; in an outdoor environment tikitag makes it possible for a visitor to an art gallery to wave his NFC enabled mobile phone at a painting and then see the painter’s Wikipedia profile appear on the phone’s screen; or in a business/logistics environment a cleaning company can, for example, use it to record that a room has been successfully cleaned through a simple touch of an NFC-enabled mobile phone to a tikitag-linked NFC tag that has been placed in the room

tikitag features a flexible API that will enable third parties to customize and embed tikitag functionality into their offerings – either seamlessly extending their existing applications or creating new applications to enable interaction with tangible things. At the same time they can promote their applications on the tikitag website.

The NFC technology uses transmitters, called Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags, which can be easily and unobtrusively attached to virtually any object and, when activated by a reader in a mobile device or a computer, send back a unique identifying signal.

At the core of the tikitag service is the tikitag Application Correlation Server (ACS), which manages the link between an NFC tag and a corresponding action to be initiated. When an NFC-enabled device (PC, Mac or NFC enabled mobile phone) touches the NFC tag, it automatically connects with the tikitag ACS. The ACS then directs the Internet-enabled device to access the appropriate online content and applications.

Pricing and availability

Starting Oct. 1 consumers can start using tikitag by purchasing a beta tikitag starter kit that consists of an NFC reader, 10 NFC tags, and access to the tikitag community site, through third-party e-commerce Websites including Amazon.com. Beta pricing is 49.95 USD. (www.tikitag.com).

Dr. Pic is All-AJAX style Free Online Photoshop!

Dr. Pic is an All-AJAX style free online photo editor that lets you modify pictures online. What I like most about this new site is that it’s free and all AJAX based for fast processing.

Nich sent us a link to his project, Dr. Pic, an all AJAX image editor. Without using any Flash, the application allows you to upload an image, do simple draw and filter operations, place text, crop, resize, and save a finished copy. Javascript is used to draw preview material to the canvas, and then the user’s commands are submitted back to a PHP backend which returns a new image to replace the previous version.

Chrome-Hacks.Net - Google Chrome Hacks Blog Launched!

For the mother of God and for whatever reason, we just launched another new blog, of course it’s called Google Chrome Hacks Blog.

Basically, the blog will cover all kinds of tips, hacks, and news about the new Google Chrome Browser.

It took us exactly 2 hours to sign up for a domain name at godaddy, stuff it with Wordpress plugins and themes, write 5 blog posts. (Not too bad of a start ey?)

New blogs are always great opportunities to pounce on, especially if it’s new technology.

Google launches their own open-source browser coined, Google Chrome. You can read about why Google decided to launch their browser here.

Under the hood, we were able to build the foundation of a browser that runs today’s complex web applications much better . By keeping each tab in an isolated “sandbox”, we were able to prevent one tab from crashing another and provide improved protection from rogue sites. We improved speed and responsiveness across the board. We also built V8, a more powerful JavaScript engine, to power the next generation of web applications that aren’t even possible in today’s browsers.

This is just the beginning – Google Chrome is far from done. We’ve released this beta for Windows to start the broader discussion and hear from you as quickly as possible. We’re hard at work building versions for Mac and Linux too, and we’ll continue to make it even faster and more robust.

Basically, Google is trying to make a new browser that will compete against the likes of Firefox and IE. On top of entering the highly competitive browser market, Google is determined to bring Web2.0 apps that use AJAX, javascript, and other popular languages to load faster.

Google is also trying to make the most “memory-efficient” browser ever by using multiple-threading. Threading is a common term used in computer hardware and software to divide CPU power among different programs.

I downloaded Google Chrome and installed on my PC through the Google Chrome Download page.

After installing, I did load up some of my blogs to see how fast it loads. Surprisingly, this browser processes CSS much like Firefox except everything seems to run faster.

I did discover another thing about the Google Chrome and how it makes new “threads”. If you press Ctrl+Alt+Del key (the same one you press when you get Windows blue screen of death), you will see “Chrome.exe” running as processes in your computer.

The strange thing is that there are multiple of these processes, not one. This is the multi-threading feature of Google Chrome. Multi-threading is also known as forking in terms of unix.

It’s a really simple idea really, having multiple processes run 1 single program for maximum efficiency and to protect against memory lock-ups.

What Google did is apply a simply computer theory into Firefox. (I believe Google’s browser is based on the same open source project as Firefox)

In conclusion, you can see that there are multiple Chrome.exe’s running at 10 to 20K of memory while Firefox grabs 144K with 1 process.

This type of multi-threading is pretty simple to do and I think it might get applied to Firefox and IE very soon.

You might be surprised to find that the Google Chrome will bring up small screenshots of the most recent websites you visited. (Another simple feature that Google applied. Simple but geninus.)

Right now, it’s too hard to tell how many people will start using the Google Chrome Web Browser but in my quick 5-minutes test, it looks really good. (Who knows, maybe in 5 years we will have Google Chrome and Firefox, no more IE and Bill Gates)

The thing I do like most about Google Chrome is that it’s completely open-source, just like Firefox. Google is really doing the next step, taking over every PC in every home. Before Google was only a search site, now they will be more once Chrome goes popular.

Here’s a good range of tools for capturing screenshots and images:

FireShot – An extremely handy screenshot extension that can shoot just the visible area of a page or capture the entire thing, no matter how long it is. Can be updated to a pro version that adds even more features such as an editor. Allows you to save to BMP, GIF, JPG or PNG.

Grab Them All – A bit different type of a screenshot program in that you enter multiple URLs, specify the type of image to shoot, and where it will be saved. When you activate the extension it goes through the list of URLs you specified and takes the shots atomatically for you. You can tell it to do either the viewable area or the entire entry page. A bit different, but a big time saver for large projects.

iimmgg.com Tools – Will allow you to take screenshots of the full page or just selected areas and upload them directly to iimmgg.com.

Kwout – Built with the idea of adding sections of a Web page to your blog entries as a form of quoting, but of course you can just save whatever sections you may need.

Screengrab – Screengrab only allows you to save your files as JPG or PNGs, but it does have a nice option in that not only can you choose the viewable area or full page for screenshots, but you can do just a section or frame if you choose. Can save you a lot of editing time by just not even bothering to save parts you won’t ever need.

Screengrab with Upload – A variation of the Screengrab extension in that you can automatically upload your screen captures to an online server to share them immediately.

Snapper – Specifically focused on letting you just select a portion of a page to take a snapshot to save yourself the effort of having to crop out unwanted portions later on.

AgreementExpress is a new site that lets you sign documents digitally. I might have to resort to using this for some of my online business. A great idea and it might get picked up by the bigger companies soon.

Agreement Express automatically converts client documents that require “wet ink signatures” into web-based agreements or smart forms.

Clients are emailed these forms and then digitally complete and sign them using Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) technology.

Urlxl is a new website that will shorten any URL similar to TinyURL. The only difference with UrlXl is that you can actually save your URLs like online bookmarking system such as Del.icio.us and make RSS Feeds with it.

The login uses Google’s login system so that’s one less hassle for Gmail users.

Though I never really ride taxis, once in awhile I will get the urge to get really drunk over at my friend’s house in downtown San Francisco. For those occasions, I will resort to calling at least 2 or 3 taxi companies and watch to see which taxi comes first.

Now here’s a website that might change all that calling. It’s a website called RideCharge that finds your taxis AND you can pay online.

Of course, any site in beta needs a lot of work before they actually work for you as I typed in some random addresses in downtown SF only to find that I need to call the Taxi company.

I am thinking that part of the problem lies in the fact that the RideCharge really needs to partner up with all the cab companies first and set up the system.

UPDATE: Now Luxor Cabs shows up on the system and you can book online. I will definitely try this route next time I need a cab.

Of course, this will take millions of dollars if you need it working in all metropolitan cities.

Not that I am complaining but I’d like to be able to use this service, if at all possible, in all areas of San Francisco where people do often take taxis.

Here’s a cool little site called BetaBitz for getting some beta testers for your new website. I just submitted SiteHoppin.com Firefox Toolbar since we are looking for private beta testers.

It’s a good idea but probably won’t grow without funding and advertising.

The site itself is kinda slow and it’s not up to Web2.0 standards but does have a lot of potential to grow if made faster I guess.

Google’s Knol Project Finally Open to Public!

Google(GOOG) has just announced public opening of their new wiki-knowledge product called “Knol”.

After months of deliberation since December of last year, this project is finally open for people to use.

Let’s take a quick look:

For responding to a Knol subject such as this Lung Cancer article, the user can leave a review with a rating. This supposedly validates the experts’ writing and becomes part of Knol’s rating system.

Knol also let’s you leave comments. I believe the comments section is really for those quick comments but the review section should be used for expert reviewers of that subject.

Let’s take a look at the writing aspects of Knol. You can write a new Knol yourself but you need to stay within these guidelines:

The Knol project is a site that hosts many knols — units of knowledge — written about various subjects. The authors of the knols can take credit for their writing, provide credentials, and elicit peer reviews and comments. Users can provide feedback, comments, related information. So the Knol project is a platform for sharing information, with multiple cues that help you evaluate the quality and veracity of information.

Knols are indexed by the big search engines, of course. And well-written knols become popular the same as regular web pages. The Knol site allows anyone to write and manage knols through a browser on any computer.

Writing a good Knol can definitely boost your SEO and online visibility, especially you are good at what you write about.

Here’s a screenshot of writing a new Knol. It looks pretty simple and basically it’s like Wikipedia but easier to use.

I don’t know how popular this Knol Project will become but I am sure many webmasters will take advantage of the early SEO you can gain from writing expertise articles.

Wow, Wordpress 2.6 is out with some really cool new features.

First of all, the new Wordpress 2.6 adds ability to edit multiple revisions, sorta like Wiki editing.

Second, the new Wordpress allows you to cut and paste text and images easily using a bookmarklet.

Version 2.6 “Tyner,” named for jazz pianist McCoy Tyner, contains a number of new features that make WordPress a more powerful CMS: you can now track changes to every post and page and easily post from wherever you are on the web, plus there are dozens of incremental improvements to the features introduced in version 2.5.

Here’s comes Twellow, a search engine for twitters basically. I typed, “zedomax” and found my twitter account which is cool I guess.

Beyond that, there are other functions like you can search by categories and whatnot.

I think this is a really good idea as search engines have proven to make a lot of money. (Google???)

HotPads.com provides interesting heat maps. I am not sure how accurate it is but the service looks very promising, especially if you are looking to rent or buy in certain area.

Above is a heat map of household income of San Francisco. The meter stops at about $61K, I wish it went further to something like $200-300K at least.

HotPads, which brought us the foreclose heat map, now offers a handy rent ratio heat map. The rent ratio is a home’s sale price divided by the annual rent of a comparable home in the same neighborhood. Looking at the rent ratio gives you a quick sense of whether it makes more sense to rent or buy in a particular neighborhood. If the ratio is high (red on the map), it is usually a good indication that you are better off renting. If it is low (blue on the map), you are better off buying.
