Square intros iPhone-enabled Credit Card Payment System!

I saw this coming, an iPhone-enabled credit card payment system. Square is actually a brainchild of Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter. This isn’t for full-fledged mobile sites but for individuals/small business who want to make accepting credit cards easier for iPhone users.

Square is an iPhone credit card payment system from Twitter’s Jack Dorsey, and it has just entered public beta. Square lets anyone with an iPhone accept payments from a credit card using an iPhone app and a small card-reader dongle which plugs into the iPhone’s headphone jack. Square is different from other solutions because it is designed for individuals, not big-business. All you need to start is the widget and an account at Square.

Google Buzz – Google Jumps into the Micro-Blogging Game!

Google has launched their own micro-blogging system on top of their already famous GMail. The new Google Buzz is very similar to Twitter except you can add photos/videos/geo-tag without having to use additional apps.

Also, the new Google Buzz is an “open” system that allows your Buzz to be connected seamlessly to your Facebook/Twitter accounts.

I have to say, I like this new Google Buzz, it will certainly be fun having the big G jump into the micro-blogging game.

And since I just bought the Nexus One, this will be rather fun to try on the mobile version too.

Another great feature Google has added to their new Buzz social system is the ability to geo-tag places sorta like FourSquares for Twitter.

ReoCities Trying to Bring Back GeoCities!

Reocities, is a new site where the owner of the site has been trying to back up some of GeoCities before Yahoo closed it down couple days ago. Well, I think it’s a great effort, perhaps he can also look in Internet Archives for backup files too.

Yahoo! has done an amazing thing by keeping GeoCities alive for as long as they did, but we feel that it is a waste to leave the Internet with a hole of this magnitude. At a minimum, Yahoo! could have simply left GeoCities as a monument to the early days.
Maybe close it off from editing and simply make it static after getting rid of the spam pages once and for all.
Behind this minimalistic page stretches a wealth of Internet history. If any of it was yours and we have successfully recovered it, then we hope it makes you happy to see it restored. We’ve rebuilt the walls to the Cities and the streets where a large part of the early settlers of the World Wide Web used to live in. You can still find them where they were before, but not all of the houses have been rebuilt yet.

What Does The Internet Think?

As more and more years go by in this Web 2.0 world, we will begin to see more and more sites that have a full sentence domain name such as this WhatDoesTheInternetThink.Net, which aggregates search engine data to show negative or positive results on any given query.

Well, being the powerful entity that it is, the “internet” ought to have a mind of its own now, doesn’t it? Which is why this site called whatdoestheinternetthink tries to demystify those nagging questions which have, until now, remained unanswered. whatdoestheinternetthink analyses the search results from popular search engines (Google
, Yahoo & Bing), and categorizes the final result on the topic as being Positive, Negative, or Don’t Care. It also colorfully depicts the percentage of search results that fall under each of these three categories, along with a short summary of this topic being discussed on Twitter.

Google Voice Search Coming to BlackBerry!

GoogleMaps were working on Voice Search not too long ago, now Google will be releasing Google Voice Search for Blackberry, a plus for Crackberry user like me. I think they are a little behind Microsoft as they launched TellMe voice search service last year but heck, as I always say, “Right Time at the Right Place” is more important than anything and I think Google has actually released their product at the right time, which is today, not last year.

Good job Googlers, I will have to try this when I am driving on the highway next time, hungry for KFC or Taco Bell.

Suppose you’re vacationing in London, and you have a craving for fish and chips. With the My Location feature enabled, you can just enter “fish n chips” into Google Mobile App, and it will return the fish and chips restaurants closest to you. No need to type in “fish and chips near SW1W”. And since Google Mobile App displays search suggestions as you type, you may only need to type part of the query before “Best Fish n Chips in London” pops up as a suggestion. We’re a fan of anything that saves keystrokes on the way to deep-fried British goodness.

You have to look beyond every successful internet company and find out that they are all TEXT-based sites in the beginning. Well, some sites like Craigslist is still TEXT-only.

Others include Google search engine, mostly text and some new enhanced search features added but the core remains text.

Now, to make this text-thing a thing of the past, CraigLook debuts as the Web 2.0-ish search engine for Craiglist with image screenshots and thumbs. We think it has a quite a potential but it’s still beta so you be the judge.

It’s quite faster than we thought it would be and it’s packed with AJAX coding to make it run in real-time.

I still like the old text-only craigslist though, it works well on most phones without having a full-browser like the iPhone.

Embedr is a new website that lets you embed multiple videos from multiple sources (including YouTube, MetaCafe, and more), and let’s you create 1 embed code that lets you go through your favorite videos in one player.

Above is my 3 videos from the Super Bowl weekend, done in just 5 seconds. I like the fact that the site lets you create playlists without registering.

We created Embedr because we needed it. We simply wanted a way to put all our favorite videos from all over the web in one place. Since then, Embedr has evolved to service a multitude of different applications.

Delivr launches, a new URL shortening site, sorta like the CozyURL I made in 5 hours, except it’s been marketed for texting on mobile phones.

Looks promising but I don’t see a reason why you need to use it over a URL shorterner like CozyURL.

Delivr, currently in private beta (we’ve got invites – see below), literally mobilizes your web content. Whether it’s a web address, Flickr photo, YouTube video, or street address, Delivr will enhance the content for mobile viewing and generate a unique URL that you can then send to friends via social sites or SMS message.

Well, I’ve always wondered how you could get alerts for videos on YouTube and there is such a service from Video-Alerts.com, awfully similar to Google Alerts except it does videos.

Track up to 10 keywords at one session;

Max number of videos in each alert is 100;

Set the alert frequency: once a day, once per two days or once per week;

Track all categories or set the preferred one.

Here’s an interesting concept for a website that can remix your images, videos, and other content across the web.

Nota is basically a web remixer for web pages you want to create without the hassle of installing a Wordpress blog or whatnot.

The best way to describe what Nota offers is “casual collaboration.” Unlike more complex whiteboarding or web design applications, Nota isn’t designed for business use, but rather for anyone who wants to quickly and easily gather web content and combine it on a single page.

Stattt.com Launched! – Stats Search Engine for Webmasters

Well, believe it or not, I made a new site “while” partying on New Years with my family.

Of course, programming a custom site isn’t really considered “work” for me, especially if it’s a new site I really like a lot.

Last year in 2008, I launched SiteHoppin.com. Well, today is 1 year past that, I am launching Stattt.com.

Stattt.com is basically a very cool tool for webmasters who want to check their web traffic stats everyday.

I didn’t actually make this site to make money or anything, I simply needed a website that could let me view all the stat sites in one page, which includes Alexa, Quantcast, and Compete.

In addition to being able to see all the major web stats in one page, we’ve added our additional ranking called “Stattt Ranking”:

As you can see, this “Stattt Rank” is based on the 3 ranking values of Alexa, Quantcast, and Compete.

I feel that as a webmaster, each of those web traffic stat sites can sometimes miss important traffic data. By triangulating the 3 web traffic rankings, we end up with something more valuable we can rely on.

The Stattt Rank is based on a small algorithm we devised that gives more weight to the lower traffic ranking numbers.

This way, even if your ranking is ZERO on one statistic site, you will still end up with a decent Stattt Rank. I have seen many websites where they are not ranked but gets plenty of web traffic in reality.

We won’t be publishing the algorithm since it’d be too easy to game if people found out.

This is really the tip of the iceburg, I’ve probably spent 5 hours making it but will be adding some more features like Google Trends, Blog Search, and etc…etc…

Anyways, please bookmark Stattt.com for future reference. I am sure if you are a webmaster, this new stat site will definitely help you save 5 minutes a day.

WPTUT – Wordpress Tutorials Social Networking Site Launched!

A Wordpress Tutorial site called WPTut.com was launched last week (in secret) by one of my friends Jason from Blogtomic.com.

He created a social networking site completely from a Wordpress blog so it’s kinda cool in that sense. If you’ve got some Wordpress tutorial, you should submit them here.

I had the pleasure of being the first user on his new site, thanks Jason!

Here’s the details about the site:

How it works:
You can sign up add tutorials or save tutorials to your favs, vote, comment and search tutorials. You also get a profile page when you submit tutorials that list your tutorials and information. Also you can also submit tutorials as a guest if you prefer. All tutorials are a link back to your site, no tutorial is actually hosted on the WPTUT site.

WPTUT – Wordpress Tutorials Social Networking Site Launched!

CozyURL.com URL Shortener Re-Launched!

CozyURL, as mentioned couple weeks ago (the URL shortening site I made in blazing 2 hours), has been relaunched with a better logo and simpler homepage.

Of course, there’s another cool addition, you can now add CozyURL as one of your Firefox search engines as shown below:

This should make it a lot easier for you to shorten those affiliate links or whatever. The site still does not support converting HTTPS, that’s something in the works for the future.

Anyways, I will have the open-source version of this later down the road when I have time to code it so the public can use it for free.

With the crazy number of twitters out there today (and Twitter applications for that matter), Qwitter brings you the service of “catching” other twitters who unsubscribe to your Twitts.

Of course, this is a totally useless service for someone like me who doesn’t twit that often anyways, but for those of you twitter-addicts, this can help you identify “why” someone unsubscribe from your twitts.

CozyURL Launched – Shorten that Affiliate URL!

Well, here’s another site called CozyURL.com I made today in about 2 hours while chatting on G-mail with Josh.

I didn’t add any graphics so it’s fast and you can easily access it from mobile devices too.

It’s basically a site that will shorten URLs like http://sdfkcs.com/jdsf923jfdsaf to http://CozyURL/120.

It’s a free site and your link will permanently remain so please knock yourself out the next time you need to shorten that long GoogleMaps URL, or simply want to remember one number for viewing the site on your mobile phone.

I might open-source the code since some of you might like to make your own, so leave a comment if you want it.

Another difference between TinyURL and CozyURL is that CozyURL uses chronological numbers to assign new Cozy URLs. Now, this will definitely help over remembering something like TinyURL.com/28dj28.

Another use is if you need to remember a long URL to load it on your mobile phone. You can simply remember one number to load that site using Cozy URL. (Well, the truth of the matter is that I didn’t want to spend too much time so I went with chronological order but it does make more sense for the average user.)

Google (GOOG) launches version 2.3.1 GoogleMaps for Mobile Phones that will include StreetView.

Although mobile GoogleMaps is good enough already with Satellite and Map views, the StreetView feature will allow users to “see” where they are going in 3D, just like the regular desktop version.

I am actually in the process of upgrading my mobile GoogleMaps on my Blackberry 8830, so will have a video soon.

Today we’re launching a new version of Google Maps for mobile with the same street-level imagery available on desktop. Wondering if the restaurant in your search results is the one you’re thinking of? Just click “Street View” after your search to see the storefront. Unsure about a complicated intersection in your directions? Use Street View to see a photo, so there’s no mistaking your turn. You can also launch Street View from any address where we have photography, or simply by clicking on the map and selecting “Street View”. You can browse Street View overlaid on the map or in full screen, rotate your view to see more of your surroundings, and move along the street.

SearchMe is a Visual Search Engine sorta like iPod Touch and iPhones!

I recently ran into a cool visual search site called SearchMe that lets you search visually using screenshots of search results. It’s really iPod Touch/iPhone browsing applied to a search engine.

The service works pretty fast and it’s pretty neat. I might not use it on regular basis but it seems to have a big future.

For being a good search engine, we gave it our “Web3.0″ tag.

I am sure more companies will be creating similar real-world tagging systems that can be connected back online but this one really is the first for us regular consumers.

Demo Conference, San Diego, September 8, 2008 – Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced that Alcatel-Lucent Ventures has debuted tikitag^sm, a consumer service, at the DEMO Conference in San Diego. tikitag, leveraging innovations within Bell Labs, enables consumers and third-party application developers to increase the value of everyday items by connecting them to online content or applications. The technology that tikitag takes advantage of to establish this connection is Near Field Communications Technology (NFC) – an evolution of RFID that connects electronic devices over short distances. The market for NFC is expected to grow significantly in the coming years. Market consultancy Strategy Analytics projects that by 2012 around 250 million NFC-enabled phones will be sold worldwide.

The tikitag service enables the launching of online applications by simply touching an NFC device such as a cell phone to an item tagged with an NFC chip. tikitag can be used in a variety of environments: for example in an in-home application a father can use tikitag to link his toddler’s teddy bear to an online story about that same bear; in an outdoor environment tikitag makes it possible for a visitor to an art gallery to wave his NFC enabled mobile phone at a painting and then see the painter’s Wikipedia profile appear on the phone’s screen; or in a business/logistics environment a cleaning company can, for example, use it to record that a room has been successfully cleaned through a simple touch of an NFC-enabled mobile phone to a tikitag-linked NFC tag that has been placed in the room

tikitag will be offered as a beta starter package on Oct. 1 through e-commerce Web sites. The package will include a USB-enabled NFC reader and electronic tags, and provide access to a community website where users can create and share new and off-the-shelf tikitag applications. Initial applications available for download include the ability to link tags to URLs or linking tagged souvenirs to photo albums. Teenagers will be able to link a tagged photo to their social network profile at Netlog® or steer an online music services player to perform pre- programmed actions via a tikitagged object. “Sharing gadgets and things linked to your social network profile can enhance both the online and real world experience of communities,” said Lorenz Bogaert, CEO of Netlog, Europe’s leading social portal

“Over the last few years there has been explosive growth in the range and types of online content – much of it related to real world objects, events or activities,” said Anthony Belpaire, General Manager of Alcatel-Lucent’s tikitag venture. “but how do you connect this online content with a person’s business card, for example, or a concert poster, or a work of art, etc….tikitag provides this missing link,” he added.

tikitag features a flexible API that will enable third parties to customize and embed tikitag functionality into their offerings – either seamlessly extending their existing applications or creating new applications to enable interaction with tangible things. At the same time they can promote their applications on the tikitag website.

The NFC technology uses transmitters, called Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags, which can be easily and unobtrusively attached to virtually any object and, when activated by a reader in a mobile device or a computer, send back a unique identifying signal.

At the core of the tikitag service is the tikitag Application Correlation Server (ACS), which manages the link between an NFC tag and a corresponding action to be initiated. When an NFC-enabled device (PC, Mac or NFC enabled mobile phone) touches the NFC tag, it automatically connects with the tikitag ACS. The ACS then directs the Internet-enabled device to access the appropriate online content and applications.

Pricing and availability

Starting Oct. 1 consumers can start using tikitag by purchasing a beta tikitag starter kit that consists of an NFC reader, 10 NFC tags, and access to the tikitag community site, through third-party e-commerce Websites including Amazon.com. Beta pricing is 49.95 USD. (www.tikitag.com).

Dr. Pic is an All-AJAX style free online photo editor that lets you modify pictures online. What I like most about this new site is that it’s free and all AJAX based for fast processing.

Nich sent us a link to his project, Dr. Pic, an all AJAX image editor. Without using any Flash, the application allows you to upload an image, do simple draw and filter operations, place text, crop, resize, and save a finished copy. Javascript is used to draw preview material to the canvas, and then the user’s commands are submitted back to a PHP backend which returns a new image to replace the previous version.

Chrome-Hacks.Net - Google Chrome Hacks Blog Launched!

For the mother of God and for whatever reason, we just launched another new blog, of course it’s called Google Chrome Hacks Blog.

Basically, the blog will cover all kinds of tips, hacks, and news about the new Google Chrome Browser.

It took us exactly 2 hours to sign up for a domain name at godaddy, stuff it with Wordpress plugins and themes, write 5 blog posts. (Not too bad of a start ey?)

New blogs are always great opportunities to pounce on, especially if it’s new technology.

Where did we get the idea for Google Chrome Hacks Blog?

Google launches their own open-source browser coined, Google Chrome. You can read about why Google decided to launch their browser here.

Under the hood, we were able to build the foundation of a browser that runs today’s complex web applications much better . By keeping each tab in an isolated “sandbox”, we were able to prevent one tab from crashing another and provide improved protection from rogue sites. We improved speed and responsiveness across the board. We also built V8, a more powerful JavaScript engine, to power the next generation of web applications that aren’t even possible in today’s browsers.

This is just the beginning – Google Chrome is far from done. We’ve released this beta for Windows to start the broader discussion and hear from you as quickly as possible. We’re hard at work building versions for Mac and Linux too, and we’ll continue to make it even faster and more robust.

Basically, Google is trying to make a new browser that will compete against the likes of Firefox and IE. On top of entering the highly competitive browser market, Google is determined to bring Web2.0 apps that use AJAX, javascript, and other popular languages to load faster.

Google is also trying to make the most “memory-efficient” browser ever by using multiple-threading. Threading is a common term used in computer hardware and software to divide CPU power among different programs.

I downloaded Google Chrome and installed on my PC through the Google Chrome Download page.

After installing, I did load up some of my blogs to see how fast it loads. Surprisingly, this browser processes CSS much like Firefox except everything seems to run faster.

I did discover another thing about the Google Chrome and how it makes new “threads”. If you press Ctrl+Alt+Del key (the same one you press when you get Windows blue screen of death), you will see “Chrome.exe” running as processes in your computer.

The strange thing is that there are multiple of these processes, not one. This is the multi-threading feature of Google Chrome. Multi-threading is also known as forking in terms of unix.

It’s a really simple idea really, having multiple processes run 1 single program for maximum efficiency and to protect against memory lock-ups.

What Google did is apply a simply computer theory into Firefox. (I believe Google’s browser is based on the same open source project as Firefox)

In conclusion, you can see that there are multiple Chrome.exe’s running at 10 to 20K of memory while Firefox grabs 144K with 1 process.

This type of multi-threading is pretty simple to do and I think it might get applied to Firefox and IE very soon.

You might be surprised to find that the Google Chrome will bring up small screenshots of the most recent websites you visited. (Another simple feature that Google applied. Simple but geninus.)

Right now, it’s too hard to tell how many people will start using the Google Chrome Web Browser but in my quick 5-minutes test, it looks really good. (Who knows, maybe in 5 years we will have Google Chrome and Firefox, no more IE and Bill Gates)

The thing I do like most about Google Chrome is that it’s completely open-source, just like Firefox. Google is really doing the next step, taking over every PC in every home. Before Google was only a search site, now they will be more once Chrome goes popular.

This new site called ErrorKey promises you to find solutions for common computer errors.

To use, simply type in the error you get (such as error 15) and keep your fingers crossed while you hope that there’s a solution for it.

It looks pretty promising as long as there are lots of computer errors in the world. (which there probably are)

Yahoo Search is now officially available on the iPhone as a customized web app on the iPhone. I think they were a little late but better late than never.

In response to Google’s popular app for the iPhone, Yahoo announced today that it has launched its own online iPhone search that not only lets you search the Web, but includes Search Assist and SearchMonkey to add even more functionality to a well-designed solution.

AgreementExpress is a new site that lets you sign documents digitally. I might have to resort to using this for some of my online business. A great idea and it might get picked up by the bigger companies soon.

Agreement Express automatically converts client documents that require “wet ink signatures” into web-based agreements or smart forms.

Clients are emailed these forms and then digitally complete and sign them using Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) technology.

It seems like more and more of these graffiti sites are popping up but I have not found other uses so far other than killing time.

Urlxl is a new website that will shorten any URL similar to TinyURL. The only difference with UrlXl is that you can actually save your URLs like online bookmarking system such as Del.icio.us and make RSS Feeds with it.

The login uses Google’s login system so that’s one less hassle for Gmail users.

Book Taxis from your Cellphone with RideCharge!

Though I never really ride taxis, once in awhile I will get the urge to get really drunk over at my friend’s house in downtown San Francisco. For those occasions, I will resort to calling at least 2 or 3 taxi companies and watch to see which taxi comes first.

Now here’s a website that might change all that calling. It’s a website called RideCharge that finds your taxis AND you can pay online.

Of course, any site in beta needs a lot of work before they actually work for you as I typed in some random addresses in downtown SF only to find that I need to call the Taxi company.

I am thinking that part of the problem lies in the fact that the RideCharge really needs to partner up with all the cab companies first and set up the system.

UPDATE: Now Luxor Cabs shows up on the system and you can book online. I will definitely try this route next time I need a cab.

Of course, this will take millions of dollars if you need it working in all metropolitan cities.

Not that I am complaining but I’d like to be able to use this service, if at all possible, in all areas of San Francisco where people do often take taxis.

Here’s a cool little site called BetaBitz for getting some beta testers for your new website. I just submitted SiteHoppin.com Firefox Toolbar since we are looking for private beta testers.

It’s a good idea but probably won’t grow without funding and advertising.

Here’s a cool site called InifiTube that will gather up your favorite videos tagged with a keyword and play them in “all-repeat” action like an MP3 player.

The site itself is kinda slow and it’s not up to Web2.0 standards but does have a lot of potential to grow if made faster I guess.

This site will definitely allow me to listen to constant Bob Marley which is definitely cool.
