IBM Layoff 800 People in IBM Australia!

IBM has just reported they will be moving more of their business to Asian countries such as China and India. In the process, they will be laying off 800 people in IBM Australia.

This is only part of 3,000 IBM employees layed off this week.

IBM seems to be having its own trouble at this tough economy. For those of you who are going through the layoff, my kindest regards and you shouldn’t have trouble getting another job if you’ve worked at IBM right? At least that’s a positive outlook to come out of this.

It was reported that IBM plans to shift more business to China and India, IBM thinkpad t20 Battery will lay off 800 people in Australia.

Australian trade unions – the Australian Services Union, said they were notified that, in addition to Australia’s federal government services, staff, other services, post will be transferred to lower-cost China and India. Layoff notice will also be issued within the next few months.

Japan about to be hit with Tsunami as a Result of Chile Earthquake! [Live Video]

Above is a “live “video of Kuji harbor, where the tsunami resulting from Chile could be hitting any minute. Scientists in Japan predict that the tsunami will be a maximum of 3 meters or about 10 feet. People are still asked to evacuate as they cannot be 100% sure.

As some of you well know, there’s been tsunamis hitting many parts of the world today including Hawaii as a result of recent Chile earthquakes.

I was watching the whole Hawaii tsunami earlier today for few hours. Luckily, Hawaii escaped the whole trial with no devastating results.

In the meanwhile, Japan is to be hit with tsunami waves any minute. Japan was also hit with a 7.3 magnitude earthquake just a day ago. That could have set off more tsunamis in other directions of the world.

Above is a live video I found of Kuji harbor in Japan, where the Tsunami is supposed to hit, expected at 10 feet.

As I am watching the live video, I can hear public speakers warning people to evacuate.

My prayers go out to those who have died in Chile and pray that tsunami doesn’t hit Japan too big.

Tsunami about to Hawaii, live coverage videos.

As some of you well know, earthquake has hit Chile earlier today, an 8.8 magnitude, one of the largest earthquakes in history of mankind. My regards for people in Chile, stay strong!

It seems that has set off tsunamis that are heading towards Hawaii as I am writing this blog post. I believe most residents have evacuated and hopefully, the tsunami won’t be devastating to Hawaii. Watch the video above to see the action live, it should hit any minute.

Square intros iPhone-enabled Credit Card Payment System!

I saw this coming, an iPhone-enabled credit card payment system. Square is actually a brainchild of Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter. This isn’t for full-fledged mobile sites but for individuals/small business who want to make accepting credit cards easier for iPhone users.

Square is an iPhone credit card payment system from Twitter’s Jack Dorsey, and it has just entered public beta. Square lets anyone with an iPhone accept payments from a credit card using an iPhone app and a small card-reader dongle which plugs into the iPhone’s headphone jack. Square is different from other solutions because it is designed for individuals, not big-business. All you need to start is the widget and an account at Square.

2009 Christmas Online Revenue Up!

According to ComScore, online retailers have had a good holiday sales as their revenues are up, more than previous years. I think this is the trend as more and more shoppers are turning online for better deals.

The major snowstorms hitting the eastern seaboard over the weekend appear to have given holiday e-commerce an additional boost, resulting in the heaviest online spending week on record at $4.8 billion,” said comScore chairman Gian Fulgoni. “Consumers have clearly continued to spend online later into the season this year, with several very strong spending days in the most recent week including the heaviest online spending day in history – Tuesday, December 15 with $913 million. Retailers have been very aggressive with late season promotions while informing consumers that they could still get their purchases shipped in time for Christmas, and these tactics seem to be paying off.”

I don’t think the snowstorms have actually contributed much, this is simply a trend of traditional, retail shoppers going online. If you look at the previous years, online sales revenue has steadily increased. Perhaps they should have increased even further this year. But still, the end result is rather satisfactory as online sales are up this year.

ReoCities Trying to Bring Back GeoCities!

Reocities, is a new site where the owner of the site has been trying to back up some of GeoCities before Yahoo closed it down couple days ago. Well, I think it’s a great effort, perhaps he can also look in Internet Archives for backup files too.

Yahoo! has done an amazing thing by keeping GeoCities alive for as long as they did, but we feel that it is a waste to leave the Internet with a hole of this magnitude. At a minimum, Yahoo! could have simply left GeoCities as a monument to the early days.
Maybe close it off from editing and simply make it static after getting rid of the spam pages once and for all.
Behind this minimalistic page stretches a wealth of Internet history. If any of it was yours and we have successfully recovered it, then we hope it makes you happy to see it restored. We’ve rebuilt the walls to the Cities and the streets where a large part of the early settlers of the World Wide Web used to live in. You can still find them where they were before, but not all of the houses have been rebuilt yet.

HelpAReporter.com is a great resource for those of you who are trying to get in touch with reporters. You simply sign up for their e-mailing list and you can become a “source” for news that are relevant to your news by connecting with the reporters.

Help a Reporter Out — or HARO, as it is known — is a mailing list that connects journalists to willing sources. Founded initially as a Facebook group, the daily email list allows reporters to put out calls for the types of people they need to connect with for stories they’re working on. For example, if a reporter is working on a story about small business owners implementing innovative marketing strategies to cope with the down economy, they’ll send out some information on HARO about the types of business owners they’d like to interview. On the receiving end, eligible sources will then contact those reporters directly to tell their story and set up an interview.

StatusNet is making rounds of VC funding to create the next revolution of self-hosted microblogging platforms. I don’t see how you can compete against with Twitter but you can definitely make your own micro-network and make your own rules. You can try the self-hosted version by downloading the zip file here. But definitely, making Twitter clone will be becoming easier and easier with companies like StatusNet creating new rules on the interwebs.

StatusNet wants to become the WordPress of microblogging. It created an open-source microblogging software platform (formerly called laconi.ca, now called status.net) which anyone can download and run on their own servers. Now, it is working on a hosted version of Status.net, currently in private beta. (We have 50 invites for anyone who includes the invitation code “TC09″ on the signup page).

It appears that LinkedIn.com is growing well, like weed really. I have been starting to use more LinkedIn for connecting with people, I find it a great resource for connecting with other business-minded people. Also, when I go to tradeshows, a lot of people will have their profiles on LinkedIn, which I can connect to easily. Even if I lose their business cards, it’s easy to keep track using LinkedIn.com.

I don’t really do any business on LinkedIn.com but I find it fun to sometimes browse through what my friends have been doing. Well, that serves a purpose I guess.

Skype for iPhone Coming Soon!!!

Here’s some good news that Skype will be coming to iPhone soon, this will be awesome for iPhone users who can start using Skype to talk overseas and cut down on the minutes used. Of course, Skype would have to be used via Wi-Fi, AT&T’s 3G service is still unstable and too slow to work via broadband.

A tipster — a very reliable one — tells me that Skype is almost ready to launch that iPhone version, perhaps as soon as next week. CTIA Wireless, a large mobile industry trade event, kicks off in Las Vegas next Wednesday, so perhaps the announcement will be made there. I am working on getting more details, as well as screenshots of the service.

It seems that Australian government has been planning too much internet censorship and the hackers have HACKED the Australian Censorship Board site.

Of course, there’s something wrong in this matter and that is the government.

As much as ANY government tries to censor the internet, the more hackers and the more people will fight back.

A lesson to be learned, do not angry your people, they will haunt your website by hacking it.

Australia’s official online censorship board’s web page was offline Thursday, hours after hackers hijacked it to protest revelations the government was going to require ISPs to block public access to thousands of websites, many of which aren’t obscene.

Anonymous hackers defaced the Censorship Board’s homepage — classification.gov.au — and restated the board’s public message in a chilling and humorous tone.

“We are part of an elaborate deception from China to control and sheepify the nation, to protect the children,” one part of the five-sentence message read, according to a screenshot. “All opposers must hate children, and therefore must be killed with a (sic) large melons….”

Before the days of free internet, there were dial-up services like Prodigy, CompuServe, and AOL. Of course, CompuServe used to be real big and Prodigy too, until AOL took over during the days of internet infrastructure.

Anyways, why has AOL failed as of lately?

They simply are not a necessary component of the web anymore. All the information that used to be provided from AOL was useful until millions of competition on the internet showed up.

(I don’t think they try to be Yahoo, they simply disintegrated due to fierce competition of the web.)

Simultaneously, AOL should have continued to “develop multiple web brands, with or without AOL logo,” under Netscape, ICQ, Winamp or AIM branding.
Steve Case should have never let Time Warner execs under the covers.
It’s not too late. AOL should go back to selling “A Premium Service, just like AOL used to market it. A choice between free Web Interface and AOL Classic experience for a modest fee. The content will be the same, it is the way that it renders that will make the difference.”

Well, the whole internet world is flopping at the idea that this Conficker Worm could be activated this April 1st, also April’s Fools Day. We don’t think it will be THAT serious but just in case, we advise you to use a Linux or Mac computer on April 1st and leave your PC to OFF position.

Now, I am wondering if the Virus experts have tried turning their clock to April 1st to see the effects, maybe I should try it…

The scariest thing about the Conficker worm is that literally millions of infected Windows PCs could be linked together to do its bidding. The second scariest thing is that no one really knows what its creator is going to do with this virtual army on April 1, when it’s scheduled to contact a server for instructions. It’s so bad, Microsoft has a running $250,000 bounty for the author, dead or alive. (Well, they probably want him alive, but they hate his guts.)

It looks like some people are trying to catch a rapist using Facebook. The only problem I see is that the CCTV screenshot doesn’t really show clearly enough of the rapist other than he seems like a black man, 200 pounds maybe? I think we will run into more serious issues like catching the wrong guy. Just don’t grab another black man, around 200 pounds and expect to find a rapist, that would be BAD, more like racial-profiling, not catching the bad guy.

10 Reasons why Skype Maybe the Biggest Web 2.0 Winner!

ReadWriteWeb has an excellent list of reasons why Skype maybe the biggest Web 2.0 winner. I have to agree, the real winners are hard to tell until the end, speaking of which, is there going to be an end to Web 2.0?

It has revenue, about $500 million in 2008. Ahem, only in the strange world of Web 2.0 is that considered remarkable. I love using Twitter, but without sustainable revenue their future has to be in question.
It is profitable. We’re talking “high-teen margins,” according to eBay’s CEO at the Accel Symposium. That does put it in a different league. It means they can survive the harshest of economic climates. If Facebook is having to raise money in these markets their model must be fundamentally flawed, which means their time as an independent company maybe limited. To control your own destiny, you need to be profitable.
Skype’s growth is accelerating in a tough market. Skype is publicly talking about growth rates of 30% to 40%. That’s not bad in an economy where flat is the new 30%. Skype has the perfect recession pitch: cut costs now! This shows in its most recent numbers. In the last quarter, Donahoe told us that Skype-to-Skype grew 73% and Skype Out grew 63%.
Disruptive technology. Disruptive technology is an over-hyped term, but in this case it really fits. Skype’s peer to peer technology enables them to dramatically under-price the competition and still make money. New users don’t cost much money – compare that with Facebook and YouTube. Even better, each new user that comes on improves the service for others – the core P2P proposition.
Viral marketing. Skype is the perfect viral business. I have lost count of the number of people I have told about Skype, for the simple reason that I want to communicate better/cheaper with them. Many of them are doing the same.
Massive market with vulnerable incumbents.$2 trillion is a lot of money. That is the size of the global telecom market. As to vulnerable, how many people feel so loyal to their telephone company that they won’t switch to get lower prices? Yes, when Skype dominates the market it won’t be worth $2 trillion any more. Even if it is worth 25% of that, say $500 billion, that is OK for the dominant player. Faced with the Skype threat, incumbents have a horrible innovator’s dilemma. To really match Skype will destroy their current business even faster.
Just wait until it bites into those cell phone bills.Skype on mobile phones – really native Skype you can use for free wherever there is WiFi – has been possible technically for some time. This has been held back by the mobile operator’s head lock on the device manufacturers. At some point the damn will break. Consumers pent up anger over nickle and diming cell phone bills will ensure that a real alternative will be welcomed.
Skype is totally mainstream. This is not about being hip or early adopter. Just show the video conversation to anybody with loved ones in distant places. You will see the surprise and amazement that makes it seem like magic.
It is a sticky service. Google still gets my business because they are better than the alternatives. But switching to an alternative will be totally simple. When somebody suggests using something other than Skype, I resist. I have my contacts in there, know exactly how it works and have integrated some external tools. Skype can continually add new features to make the experience better as our hunger for communication is pretty well limitless.
Skype can do an IPO. For anyone younger than 30, we should probably spell that out: Initial Public Offering. We keep being told that the IPO market is moribund because of Sarbanes-Oxley. Baloney! The IPO market is moribund because we have lacked profitable high-growth companies that move into huge markets.

Here’s an interesting news that someone had been impersonating the Austin Police on Twitter.

Although not much of a news to me, this could be pivotal for the police officers who must deal with bs on Twitter. Well, if they use Twitter that is.

I don’t think Twitter is that popular yet but this could be start of many, many impersonations on Twitter and they can’t stop ALL of them…

After complaints from the City of Austin and the Texas attorney general’s office, the social networking site Twitter has shut down a fake account that pretended to issue Austin Police Department bulletins with official-sounding messages that included “warming up my radar gun for SXSWi.”

The “AustinPD” page had about 450 followers. It was created in 2008 and used the official City of Austin seal. The page now states that the account “has been suspended due to strange activity.”

You have to look beyond every successful internet company and find out that they are all TEXT-based sites in the beginning. Well, some sites like Craigslist is still TEXT-only.

Others include Google search engine, mostly text and some new enhanced search features added but the core remains text.

Now, to make this text-thing a thing of the past, CraigLook debuts as the Web 2.0-ish search engine for Craiglist with image screenshots and thumbs. We think it has a quite a potential but it’s still beta so you be the judge.

It’s quite faster than we thought it would be and it’s packed with AJAX coding to make it run in real-time.

I still like the old text-only craigslist though, it works well on most phones without having a full-browser like the iPhone.

Here’s some interesting data that folks at Gizmodo did, speed testing of WiMAX versus 3G EVDO on various different locations in Portland.

I think it’s clear that WiMAX can be 10 times faster than 3G EVDO but we still will need to see more antennas and better coverage to be near where Korea and Japan are.

I am still complaining though, why is USA still 3+ years behind WiMAX when Korea and Japan has been enjoying perfect coverage? Lol, I will let you ponder on that, not your fault, the big, evil telecommunication company’s fault.

Like most carriers, Clearwire takes advantage the many tall cell towers that line the highway, meaning you get WiMax’s sick bandwidth pretty much unbroken as you fly down the road at 60 or 70 miles per hour. In the following video—in 90 quick seconds—you’ll see the following:
• Speakeasy speedtest showing roughly 13Mbps at 60 miles per hour
• Skype voice call (sorry we didn’t do a video conference)
• Slingbox video that’s being uploaded via WiMax at Clearwire’s office, and downloaded via WiMax in the car
• Hulu, where we load up and begin watching a full-screen episode of The Daily Show, at 70 miles per hour

Here’s a good news on the Apple iPhone and how it takes over 66% of mobile internet market. It might be a great time to re-focus your internet marketing strategy to fit the iPhone mobile market. (if you haven’t already)

I am not sure if this is accurate though, it’s hard to tell Blackberry’s use since a lot of people use Opera Mini, that won’t be recorded correctly.

Other smartphone platforms haven’t fared any better, according to the metrics. Google’s Android and Symbian were both locked in a tie for 6.15 percent. Research in Motion’s email-centric BlackBerry OS was used less often at just 2.24 percent and was even outmatched by PalmOS devices, which represented 2.37 percent of cellular web use last month.

We are a well funded startup making our premier at the Web 2.0 Expo this year. Delivr launches, a new URL shortening site, sorta like the CozyURL I made in 5 hours, except it’s been marketed for texting on mobile phones.

Looks promising but I don’t see a reason why you need to use it over a URL shorterner like CozyURL.

Delivr, currently in private beta (we’ve got invites – see below), literally mobilizes your web content. Whether it’s a web address, Flickr photo, YouTube video, or street address, Delivr will enhance the content for mobile viewing and generate a unique URL that you can then send to friends via social sites or SMS message.

I guess the new stimulus package is causing scammers to make new online scams to take your money and run.

Just watch out for any bs out there, here’s something from the IRS:

This new scam is typical of tax time behavior by the bad guys and the stimulus package only offers scammers the chance to get more creative. As such, it might be useful to re-examine what the IRS will and will not do on the Web.

The IRS does not initiate taxpayer communications through e-mail.

The IRS does not request detailed personal information through e-mail

The IRS does not send e-mail requesting your PIN numbers, passwords or similar access information for credit cards, banks or other financial accounts

If you receive an e-mail from someone claiming to be the IRS or directing you to an IRS site:

Do not reply

Do not open any attachments. Attachments may contain malicious code that will infect your computer

Do not click on any links. If you clicked on links in a suspicious e-mail or phishing Web site and entered confidential information, visit the IRS Identity Theft page

Well, I’ve always wondered how you could get alerts for videos on YouTube and there is such a service from Video-Alerts.com, awfully similar to Google Alerts except it does videos.

Track up to 10 keywords at one session;

Max number of videos in each alert is 100;

Set the alert frequency: once a day, once per two days or once per week;

Track all categories or set the preferred one.

Here’s a really interesting blog post from the Google blog on how Google analyzes users’ searches using heatmaps.

Now, this is something that is very very interesting as I am a writing on the exact subject, “search”.

You can also do this type of test on your own website using CrazyEgg.

To see what the eye-tracking data we collect looks like, let’s go back to the results page we got for the query [how to tie a tie]. The following video clip shows in real time how a participant in our study scanned the page. And yes, seriously — the video is in real time! That’s how fast the eyes move when scanning a page. The larger the dot gets, the longer the users’ eye pauses looking at that specific location.

GMail, Google’s free online e-mail service, finally gets multiple inboxes where you can use different “labels” or “tags” to organize your inbox. Now, this is a great addition, sorta like Microsoft Outlook but 10 times better since you can also control the “labels”. (or set which type of e-mail gets “labeled”)

If you have multiple e-mail addresses, this might be a great way to organize them without having all your e-mail addresses flooded into one inbox like before.

Kudos to the GMail team and I look forward to even more innovation from the Googlers.

So when I heard about Gmail Labs, I started implementing a Labs feature in my 20% time that would help me (and you!) spend less time monitoring important messages that may end up getting filtered away. Starting today, you can try Multiple Inboxes, a Labs experiment which makes it possible to have more than one ‘inbox’ in your default Gmail view.

iDesktop.tv offers custom skinning of your Youtube. Other than that, iDesktop.tv is great for saving your favorite YouTube videos in your favorites or to your PC via any preferred format such as AVI, MOV, etc…etc…

The customization options go pretty far which you can see on the examples page; basically, there’s almost nothing you can’t do, and the look and feel of your player depends on your design skills and imagination. However, the YouTube videos themselves can only be changed to a certain extent, and some elements of your video player will always be limited by their design. Another important feature is the ability to customize ads, which can be placed at start, between or at the end of a playlist.

Here’s an interesting chart that shows online ad revenues for the big 4. I have to say, Google is doing really well even in this tough economy and so is everyone else.

For the purposes of this analysis, I took the total advertising revenues from both Google and Yahoo, including their network revenues paid to affiliates, the online revenues reported by Microsoft, and only the advertising portion of AOL’s revenues. The revenue share figures above are rounded. Below are the absolute revenue numbers, broken down by company:

Here’s an interesting concept for a website that can remix your images, videos, and other content across the web.

Nota is basically a web remixer for web pages you want to create without the hassle of installing a Wordpress blog or whatnot.

The best way to describe what Nota offers is “casual collaboration.” Unlike more complex whiteboarding or web design applications, Nota isn’t designed for business use, but rather for anyone who wants to quickly and easily gather web content and combine it on a single page.

My favorite Web 2.0 video site YouTube has just added title and rating within the embedded videos, smart move.

YouTube is inserting more of the information you can get on the website into the embedded videos that are spread far and wide across the Web. Embeds now include both the Title and the Rating for each video – information that dissolves once you click play.

Holy cow, GoogleMaps van hits a baby deer!

I feel bad for the poor deer but then, stuff like this isn’t unavoidable unless we stopped having roads.

You can check it out here on GoogleMaps (although it seems like Google has removed it for now).

I wonder what will turn up on GoogleMaps next, maybe a dealer selling crack to whore on the street?

As you follow the street view scene down Five Points Road in Rush, NY, you can see the deer run out in front of the car, get hit and then see it on the side of the road before the car pulls over. And that’s the end of the Street View data for Five Points Road.

Obama’s flexible use of YouTube and other Web 2.0 services may be the very first example of a successful political campaign. (we hope that is)

I really believe this move will change the way every politician does things in the future, more transparent and connected to the people. (who are working on the internet anyways)

The year of Ox is also President Obama’s year, an Ox is honest which is good.

Having a massive following of Web 2.0 crowd can only mean good thing for Obama and his administration as people are eager to support a better future.

Now, you could probably apply this concept to “any” business, it doesn’t have to be political at all. **hint** **hint**

Well, it’s official and what a day is for the new President Obama. I think what makes this day special is the fact that there are so many supporters and this could be the biggest event in history.

I remember when Barack Obama Clinton-and-Obama-Economic-Plans Mar-08 won the election couple months ago and heard lots of crazy screams around my neighborhood.

Well, same thing happened again, right after Obama’s oath http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oath of office.

I have to say, there’s some tough tasks President Obama will have to face but the important thing is that people support him. This has to be the biggest auguration in history of America.

That said, Obama is the right person for the job. Even if he isn’t, as long as there’s a massive support, I think he will do better than the rest.
