Security Alert! – Wordpress Version 2.8.2 Download

WordPress has just announced that comment forms can allow hackers to hack your admin page to redirect to hacker’s desired pages, please update to version 2.8.2 so you are no more vulnerable to this hack.

WordPress 2.8.2 fixes an XSS vulnerability. Comment author URLs were not fully sanitized when displayed in the admin. This could be exploited to redirect you away from the admin to another site. Download 2.8.2 or automatically upgrade from the Tools->Upgrade page of your blog’s admin.

Lol… Dalai Lama is now on Twitter, please follow here.

It appears the Dalai Lama is following in the footsteps of Pope Benedict XVI and moving into the world of social networking. Today he joined microblogging service Twitter.

Going under the obscure Twitter name @OHHDL, The Office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama sent out a welcome tweet earlier today introducing the official Twitter page of the Dalai Lama.

Delivr – URL Shortener for Mobile Content!

Delivr launches, a new URL shortening site, sorta like the CozyURL I made in 5 hours, except it’s been marketed for texting on mobile phones.

Looks promising but I don’t see a reason why you need to use it over a URL shorterner like CozyURL.

Delivr, currently in private beta (we’ve got invites – see below), literally mobilizes your web content. Whether it’s a web address, Flickr photo, YouTube video, or street address, Delivr will enhance the content for mobile viewing and generate a unique URL that you can then send to friends via social sites or SMS message.

Well, I’ve always wondered how you could get alerts for videos on YouTube and there is such a service from Video-Alerts.com, awfully similar to Google Alerts except it does videos.

Track up to 10 keywords at one session;

Max number of videos in each alert is 100;

Set the alert frequency: once a day, once per two days or once per week;

Track all categories or set the preferred one.

Stattt.com Launched! – Stats Search Engine for Webmasters

Well, believe it or not, I made a new site “while” partying on New Years with my family.

Of course, programming a custom site isn’t really considered “work” for me, especially if it’s a new site I really like a lot.

Last year in 2008, I launched SiteHoppin.com. Well, today is 1 year past that, I am launching Stattt.com.

Stattt.com is basically a very cool tool for webmasters who want to check their web traffic stats everyday.

I didn’t actually make this site to make money or anything, I simply needed a website that could let me view all the stat sites in one page, which includes Alexa, Quantcast, and Compete.

In addition to being able to see all the major web stats in one page, we’ve added our additional ranking called “Stattt Ranking”:

As you can see, this “Stattt Rank” is based on the 3 ranking values of Alexa, Quantcast, and Compete.

I feel that as a webmaster, each of those web traffic stat sites can sometimes miss important traffic data. By triangulating the 3 web traffic rankings, we end up with something more valuable we can rely on.

The Stattt Rank is based on a small algorithm we devised that gives more weight to the lower traffic ranking numbers.

This way, even if your ranking is ZERO on one statistic site, you will still end up with a decent Stattt Rank. I have seen many websites where they are not ranked but gets plenty of web traffic in reality.

We won’t be publishing the algorithm since it’d be too easy to game if people found out.

This is really the tip of the iceburg, I’ve probably spent 5 hours making it but will be adding some more features like Google Trends, Blog Search, and etc…etc…

Anyways, please bookmark Stattt.com for future reference. I am sure if you are a webmaster, this new stat site will definitely help you save 5 minutes a day.

Google Reader Hack – How to Find Out Hidden Blog RSS Subscriber Numbers using Google Reader!

If there’s a site that doesn’t display # of RSS subscribers, here’s a simple way to compare and spy:

1. Goto Google Reader and subscribe to the blog you wish to spy on.

2. Click on “show details” as shown below:

3. Google reader will tell you how many readers are subscribed via Google reader.

Now, this won’t tell you exactly how many are subscribed to the blog, but at least it will give you a good knowledge of how many in comparison to your blog. (For example, Zedomax.com actually gets about 1300 RSS subscribers but only 163 Google Reader users)

WPTUT – Wordpress Tutorials Social Networking Site Launched!

A Wordpress Tutorial site called WPTut.com was launched last week (in secret) by one of my friends Jason from Blogtomic.com.

He created a social networking site completely from a Wordpress blog so it’s kinda cool in that sense. If you’ve got some Wordpress tutorial, you should submit them here.

I had the pleasure of being the first user on his new site, thanks Jason!

Here’s the details about the site:

How it works:
You can sign up add tutorials or save tutorials to your favs, vote, comment and search tutorials. You also get a profile page when you submit tutorials that list your tutorials and information. Also you can also submit tutorials as a guest if you prefer. All tutorials are a link back to your site, no tutorial is actually hosted on the WPTUT site.

Gawker Media Blog Network Reaches 297 PageViews Per Month!

One of the most interesting blog networks (and one of the earliest blog start-ups) is Gawker Network. They are probably the 1st or the 2nd biggest blog network in the world as far as number of pageviews.

They have just reached a record 297 Million pageviews for the month of October. (In contrast, Zedomax Blog Network reaches about 1-2 Million pageviews)

Congratulations to Gawker and blog networks like this keep the mainstream media from taking over the blogsphere. There’s been a lot of rumors that blogging is dying and that individual bloggers will not be able to overcome the takeover of mainstream media (such as CNN) but this proves that blogs are growing and democracy of blogsphere will be maintained in the future.

CozyURL Launched – Shorten that Affiliate URL!

Well, here’s another site called CozyURL.com I made today in about 2 hours while chatting on G-mail with Josh.

I didn’t add any graphics so it’s fast and you can easily access it from mobile devices too.

It’s basically a site that will shorten URLs like http://sdfkcs.com/jdsf923jfdsaf to http://CozyURL/120.

It’s a free site and your link will permanently remain so please knock yourself out the next time you need to shorten that long GoogleMaps URL, or simply want to remember one number for viewing the site on your mobile phone.

I might open-source the code since some of you might like to make your own, so leave a comment if you want it.

Another difference between TinyURL and CozyURL is that CozyURL uses chronological numbers to assign new Cozy URLs. Now, this will definitely help over remembering something like TinyURL.com/28dj28.

Another use is if you need to remember a long URL to load it on your mobile phone. You can simply remember one number to load that site using Cozy URL. (Well, the truth of the matter is that I didn’t want to spend too much time so I went with chronological order but it does make more sense for the average user.)

Zedomax Network Stats Update!

Here’s the stats update for all the Zedomax Network. This doesn’t include our private-beta blogs that are not listed here but it’s a still a good way to tell how business is going lately.

In January, Zedomax Network was averaging near 12,000 uniques per day, now we are almost at 20,000 after 10 months. At this rate, I think we can hit 24K by end of this year, that would be 100% growth over a year.

It’s really mind-bogging when I first started, I didn’t envision this. Of course, we did see the same thing last time I did a stats update.

We will wait until maybe middle of next year and see how things are going. Yes, we hope somewhere around 30,000 would be pretty good.

Zedomax Network Stats Update!

Interesting Blog Promotion Tools I have been experimenting with…

Well, as a blog marketer, I have to use the latest top-notch tools for promoting all of our blogs and here’s a couple of tools I have been experimenting with:

Zimbio – Zimbio is a news syndication site where you can feed your blog feeds. It’s basically an additional way to promote your content. I haven’t got that much traffic from Zimbio but you can basically strengthen your SEO and content exposure free simply by signing up and submitting your blogs.

ClipMarks – ClipMarks is a “clipping” tool that lets you easily clip images, text without having to upload images or use the default Wordpress platform. After you clip, you can easily link up your blog to publish automatically. Although they do not support tagging, I love Clipmarks as you can blog very, very fast. This isn’t for every blogger but it is great for any blogs that needs fast content. You can’t get any faster than this. You can see an example of how I use ClipMarks to promote my travel blog here.

One thing you need to check for is how “big” a social network is, if there’s no traffic, it’s probably a waste of your time to use it. There’s thousands of ways to promote your blog but you need to stick with the top-notch ones in order to get ahead. If you look at Zimbio’s traffic stats right now, they are going up a lot and it’s a great time to get your blog syndicated.

Google Korea buys Korean version of Wordpress!

Google Korea buys Korean version of Wordpress!

Google Korea buys TnC, a blogging software company who has been making blogging software similar to Wordpress. (Basically a Korean version of Wordpress). I have personally tried their software and it is not bad to say the least.

Just like Google bought Blogspot, this might be a sign that blogging in Korea has just started. As far as I know, South Koreans has a long history of community blogging, they have yet to develop as commercial blogs. (Perhaps they are a little behind in that arena but don’t be fooled, South Koreans have their own “Wordpress” per-say and that’s just only one of the companies making a blog software.

Wordpress still leads and will keep leading the world’s blogging software platform but great buys like this will allow Google to re-create their own Wordpress market, starting with a beta test in South Korea. (I think they are testing the grounds before doing something similar in the U.S.)

I think this is a good move on Google’s part as their advertising network of Adsense and AdWords truly go hand-in-hand with blogging.

Even better than Google’s Blogspot deal, this TnC deal will be taking over the actual open-source blogging platform, not a website.

Chrome-Hacks.Net - Google Chrome Hacks Blog Launched!

For the mother of God and for whatever reason, we just launched another new blog, of course it’s called Google Chrome Hacks Blog.

Basically, the blog will cover all kinds of tips, hacks, and news about the new Google Chrome Browser.

It took us exactly 2 hours to sign up for a domain name at godaddy, stuff it with Wordpress plugins and themes, write 5 blog posts. (Not too bad of a start ey?)

New blogs are always great opportunities to pounce on, especially if it’s new technology.

Chrome-Hacks.Net – Google Chrome Hacks Blog Launched!

Google Chrome EULA Claims Ownership of everything you do???

In a recent post over at Gizmodo about the Google Chrome’s End User License Agreement (EULA), Google supposedly owns everything that you “do” on the Google Chrome.

Of course, we think that the EULA was just worded vaguely but probably didn’t mean to mean that Google is going to own everything you do on the Google Chrome browser.

Here’s the bits in question:

11. Content license from you

11.1 You retain copyright and any other rights you already hold in Content which you submit, post or display on or through, the Services. By submitting, posting or displaying the content you give Google a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, and non-exclusive license to reproduce, adapt, modify, translate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute any Content which you submit, post or display on or through, the Services. This license is for the sole purpose of enabling Google to display, distribute and promote the Services and may be revoked for certain Services as defined in the Additional Terms of those Services.

11.2 You agree that this license includes a right for Google to make such Content available to other companies, organizations or individuals with whom Google has relationships for the provision of syndicated services, and to use such Content in connection with the provision of those services.

11.3 You understand that Google, in performing the required technical steps to provide the Services to our users, may (a) transmit or distribute your Content over various public networks and in various media; and (b) make such changes to your Content as are necessary to conform and adapt that Content to the technical requirements of connecting networks, devices, services or media. Wordpress 2.6 is Out with Wiki-like editing!

Wow, Wordpress 2.6 is out with some really cool new features.

First of all, the new Wordpress 2.6 adds ability to edit multiple revisions, sorta like Wiki editing.

Second, the new Wordpress allows you to cut and paste text and images easily using a bookmarklet.

Version 2.6 “Tyner,” named for jazz pianist McCoy Tyner, contains a number of new features that make WordPress a more powerful CMS: you can now track changes to every post and page and easily post from wherever you are on the web, plus there are dozens of incremental improvements to the features introduced in version 2.5.

This is a guide to blogging your nuts out when you are traveling or
outdoors without an access to a computer. Of course, we will be using
a cellphone PDA to blog ourselves nuts.

First and foremost, you can simply use an email client to write your articles.

I highly recommend that you publish your cellphone blog post
afterwards when you have access to your computer.

Mobile blogging is really good for those of you on the constant go.
If you find yourself stuck waiting for a flight or even if you are on
a long bus commute, you can easily turn that into a valuable blog
writing time and let your ideas fly on your PDA keyboard. Of course,
we do recommend you get a full qwerty keyboard equipped pda.

The reason I made this post was also because of the fact that I am
actually sitting at the park as I write this blog post.

With no access to my computer but good broadband access to my gmail, I
am simply writing this during an outdoor party actually.

You see, great ideas on blog posts can be very productive even outside
your home office.

Perhaps, I will take this idea even further and try to blog 24/7 on the go.

Of course, it’s a lot harder to do linking and uploading images so I
try to keep that for later when I get back to my home office.

Now, there are numerous ways to also publish live on your cellphone but I won’t get into that as I don’t recommend it.

Google and the Anti-Obama Bloggers

It seems like some of the bloggers on blogger.com with anti-obama blogs have been blocked.

Personally, I don’t have a political opinion here but it looks like Google is marking those blogs as “spam”.

I am not sure what Google’s policies are on political blogs but just as an advice, I wouldn’t host my blog on blogger if I seriously wanted a “free voice” or freedom.

The bloggers in question, most of them supporters of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, and all of them opposed to Senator Obama, received a notice from Google last week saying that their sites had been identified as potential “spam” blogs. “You will not be able to publish posts to your blog until we review your site and confirm that it is not a spam blog,” the Google e-mail read.

Heck, the funny thing is, supporters of Clinton should now be supporting Obama, what is happening???

Well, we will leave that up to you to decide.

Blog SEO 101 – Blogger Put NoFollow on Outgoing Links for Free Services!

Well, this one’s pretty simple but a lot of people forget to put nofollow on links that are going out.

I don’t mean you should put nofollow on blogroll links but links like feedburner, flickr, and other free services you link to.

Don’t simply copy and paste as you are giving away valuable Pagerank to those free sites.

Well, that’s if you want to keep your PageRank as high as possible. It’s pretty much pointless to put a nofollow on those links anyways.

I know, I know, you want to thank those sites that give you the free service but realize that every link is valuable and if you are serious about gaining traction in the internet world, you should really pay attention here. Besides, those free services probably already got millions of free links from other bloggers who don’t give a shi*. I am just telling you if you do give a shi*.

Why do people forget about this simple fact?

Well, because most of the time, you end up copying and pasting the code from those free service sites. Now remember they don’t have a ToS that says you need to put a do-follow link in order to use their services. It’s only fair for you as a blogger to protect your Pagerank from going out to links like that. It’s actually very important that you watch out where your outlinks are going to as it will determine the number of search engine traffic you receive over the long term.

Now, don’t tell me you are on the do-follow campaign, that’s just something I won’t get into but it’s only hurting your blog. I think it’s smarter to play the safe side and make sure your do-follow links are only to those sites that you want it to go out and keep everything else, as I said before, a no-follow folks.

I maybe right or wrong but you might as well be safe than sorry.

Worst Kept Secret about Growing Blogs and Search Engine Traffic!

Well, today I will explain to you a little details on how search engines work and how knowing about this “secret” can help your blog grow 2-3 times.

When I first started blogging, my blog was on a shared server with about 10 other sites. After my blog got “digged” several times, I had more visitors than my server could handle. So I did upgrade it to a dedicated server.

Now, what’s so special about upgrading to a dedicated server?

Well, let me first tell you the “secret” behind search engines.

You see, search engines “crawl” your site and index your pages based on the different words, keywords, etc…etc…

Now if the search engine can “crawl” your site within 1-3 seconds, you are probably okay. But if you are on a shared server and it takes more than 3 seconds to “crawl” your site, the search engine will not come back to your site as often and your pages won’t get indexed as fast and some pages will come up missing.

What you need to do is make sure your site is always at 25% of full capacity on the server.

So if your daily traffic is like 500 uniques, it should be able to handle at least 2,000 uniques.

Search engines WILL crawl your site much more efficiently and send you more traffic only if your server can handle it.

If you are on a shared server and it take the search engines 10 seconds to “crawl” your site, they are not going to want to send you traffic because your site will be very very slow and cannot handle more traffic.

You see, Google’s branding is about bringing the “fastest” information to you. Now if someone searched for something and the site loads very very slow, that’s going to look bad on Google.

Of course, you need the content first and foremost, but after that, it’s all about SPEED.

That’s the worst kept secret that no book will teach you and you won’t understand unless you’ve experienced it.

It’s logical and common sense. Now, go apply it on your blog and start receiving 2-3 times more traffic simply because your server can handle more traffic.

What do you need to do?

You need to forsee how much traffic you will be getting over the next 1-3 months. If your server slows down a lot, it’s time for hardware upgrade. If you don’t upgrade, you will lose valuable visitors.

Google will be launching adsense ads for feeds next week. This will be great since I have been using Yahoo publisher as Google Adsense doesn’t currently support feedvertising.

If you have a lot of subscribers, you might be able to make some more money with the new feeds addition. But for most of you, it might not make a difference if you are not making money with Adsense anyways…

This is huge news for content publishers. As we know first-hand, monetization on RSS feeds to-date has been mediocre at best compared to Web-based advertising, and with an increasing amount of reading and conversation taking place off-site, that’s a brewing problem in the world of content publishing. It also means that the few remaining hold outs who only publish partial feeds (I’m looking at you CNET and The New York Times) may finally offer full feeds, since they can now be effectively monetized. On the other hand, for RSS consumers, it probably means the free ride is over.

AjaxDaddy give you some real good free code sniplets on various different Ajax implementations. Although I don’t have use for this as I prefer from-scratch Ajax coding, this can be very useful for anyone who’s not familiar with Ajax technology.

For Your Reference, what is AJAX?

AJAX is simply a combination of XMLHTTP, Javascript, and PHP to bring you “refreshing” of pages without reloading. You can read more about it here, here’s some books I also recommend you reading to get started:

JavaScript and Ajax for the Web – This is the best book to get you started with AJAX, I’ve read all the others ones but not as comprehensive and easy to read as this one.

Ajax Hacks – This book has lots of little tips and tricks for your Ajax code, definitely recommended if you are serious about Ajax development/learning.

AjaxBuddy, a free repository of Web 2.0-style site tools, is great for site owners who don’t have time to learn an entire programming language, or just need a starter block of code to get building. Grab free, easy-to-modify code for Flickr-like editing fields, quick-loading slideshows and tabbed galleries, instant graphs, date-choosing calendars, and dozens more examples.

I think this is a great idea since a lot of bloggers don’t want to be podcasting all the time and BlogAmp brings you the “share” idea sorta like Youtube.

Snackr – A Desktop App for reading RSS

Snackr, is a desktop app based on the Adobe Flex technology that let’s you browse RSS with ease.

Although not too big fan of desktop apps, this one might have potential to go very big.

What’s Snackr? It’s an RSS ticker that pulls random items from your feeds and scrolls them across your desktop. When you see a title that looks interesting, you can click on it to pop up the item in a window.

How do I get it? If you’re running Windows or Mac OS X, just click the “Install Now” button over there on the right. If that doesn’t work, download and install the Adobe AIR runtime, then download and run the Snackr installer manually.

What about Linux? Snackr does run on the Linux AIR alpha we just released, but it doesn’t look right (animations are glitchy, transparency doesn’t work). It should be functional, though. You’ll need to download the runtime manually for now, since auto-install doesn’t work for Linux in the current alpha, then download and run the Snackr installer.

What’s this AIR thing? Snackr was built using Adobe Flex 3 and Adobe AIR 1.0. AIR makes it really easy to build cross-platform desktop apps using web technologies like AJAX, Flash and Flex. The Adobe AIR runtime will be installed when you install Snackr. Go ahead. It’s pretty small. It won’t bite you.

Here’s a cool site that’s an online directory of widgets. It’s sorta like Digg, a type of social network where you can submit, rate, and find widgets for your website.

Heck, we might even submit out Beer Widgets and see how it does.

Widgiland is a directory of online widgets. It houses thousands of widgets for web, desktop and mobile platforms. Users can select widgets for their blogs and personal web pages, for forums and email, for feeds, and search and for messaging among other things. Widgets are categorized by type and by platform, for instance iGoogle, Pageflakes, and NetVibes.

How to increase web traffic from zero to 200 visitors per day in a week!

To prove that quantity rules in the blogging world, I averaged about 5-10 blog posts per day on this site, Zedomax.net over the last week or so.

Before that, I rarely updated the site and wasn’t trying to bring any traffic.

As you can see, with lots of hard work blogging, you can easily go from 20-30 visitors to 200-300 visitors within a week or two as seen in the above statcounter graph.

Now, my next goal is to hit around 500-1000 visitors within the next 2 weeks. I probably won’t achieve it but it’s a good goal. On the other hand, there is also good chance I just might get there if I push to 24 blog posts per day.

Another secret I can tell you about why “quantity” works is that Google search engine is “all” about finding new information fast and giving that to the consumers.

The reason why the top 100 bloggers have minimum of 24 posts per day is because our world is full of information. Think of how many new things that happen daily. Do you think you can cover all the new information in just 24 blog posts? No, the answer is that who ever is providing new information quicker to the search engines will get a boost in traffic from the people who search for that information.

Now, the secret is, “you gotta blog about something new”.

If you look carefully, almost every blog post on this blog was about some new company that launched something. Next time someone wants to find out about that new company, guess who’s getting that traffic?

How to increase PageRank by being Link Smart!

Well, I did a post on how to protect yourself from Pagerank before, now I will tell you how to protect yourself losing Pagerank through “Link Smarts”.

What are “Link Smarts”?

Basically, Google algorithm has been built to award sites with lots of links coming in and less going out.

You need to be very careful about giving out links on your blogroll especially if your blog is established.

Why?

Well let’s say you trade 10 blog links to 10 blogs with PR3 and your blog has PR4. That’s not going to help you get a higher PR.

FYI, you need to trade blog links with other blogs that have at least the same Pagerank as you do. Otherwise, you are really shooting yourself in the foot and your Pagerank will decrease over time.

Sounds simple but do you actually do it?

Well, I have to admit that I did trade blogrolls in the past very freely. This is actually good if your blog is new. But once you get to a certain point, you need to re-organize your blogrolls and make sure everyone in your blogroll is linking back to you. Don’t link to someone just because they are famous, you are not helping yourself.

Another Tip

Try to trade blogrolls with other blogs with the same ‘niche’ topic as you are in. The more related, the merrier.

Now, if you follow the above tips, you should start rising slowly with your Pagerank and don’t forget to subscribe to this blog!

How to increase PageRank by being Link Smart!

How to protect yourself against Blog Post Theft and Splogs!

Remember I did a post on how to protect yourself from Pagerank loss and Splogs?

Well today I will reveal another secret that can protect yourself against Blog Post Theft and Splogs.

The secret?

Use tags but hide them using the following code:

Now, some people might worry that this might go against Google’s ToS policy but as long as you give them a sitemap using the sitemap plugin, there’s no worries.

What does it do?

Well, every time some splogs “scrapes” your content, they will also scrape your “invisible” links. Now, let’s say you have 10 tags. Each tag by the way points to something like http://zedomax.net/tag/web20.

So every time a sploggers scrapes your content, they also give back backlinks to you as many tags you put on that post.

This should be good since your scraped content now automatically gets linked back to your blog so the end result?

Even if splogs steal your content, Google will award you and give you higher Pagerank since everything is pointing back at you.

To do this, I highly suggest you use the Simple Tags plugin and do the following as seen here:

To protect against scrapers who only scrape the top of your content, you can even add your tags to the top of your content. But I think this should be good enough for most splogs as full page content scraping is the one you need to prevent the most.

Quantity still rules in Blogging World

Remember my last post about Quality vs. Quantity?

Well, after doing some testing with most of my blogs, it’s clear now that content isn’t everything. Quantity can bring you stability of a blog’s growth while Quality can bring you a high number of niche readers.

Why do you ask?

Because content is great, only if you can couple that with great internet marketing.

You can compare to real life business.

For example, you have the greatest product in the world but no one knows about you and you end up selling very few.

It’s the same thing in the blogging world. I know many great bloggers with the highest quality content, yet their traffic, PageRank, and readership never grows over time because they don’t market themselves.

The best way for someone who is not already famous is to blog a LOT. I don’t mean to create splogs but do create original content but you must blog a LOT.

How much is blogging a lot?

Well, if you want to be serious about making money blogging or getting ahead of competition, you have to at least blog as much as your competition. You look at the Top 100 blogs in the world, they all blog no less than 24 posts per day, 1 per hour. I personally do find 1 per hour is most optimal.

If you are not John Chow and you do not already have 20K RSS readership nor 6K unique visitors per day, there is no way you will ever grow in traffic and SEO unless you start blogging like crazy.

Of course, there are always exceptions. If you are already famous, you are a total expert on your topic, or you simply know “internet marketing”. If that’s the case, that’s fine but if not, I highly suggest you start blogging at least 3 to 5 posts per day minimum.

Those big bloggers will beat you down and no one will hear your voice unless you can keep up with their blogging pace.

Now, if you ignore my advice and you do 1 or 2 posts per day, you will probably be okay too. (It might take you longer to reach the same goals)

24 posts per day is definitely recommended for all you bloggers serious about going “pro”. If your topic is hard to write so many posts per day, then do focus on “fun” content. No one likes to read a Master’s Thesis, but everyone likes a joke, humor, or something to take their mind off the long day.

The New Alexa Rankings – Did you tank or shoot up?

Hey folks, if you don’t know what Alexa is, it’s a statistics web-app that “estimates” web traffic to a website.

As of today, Amazon, the company behind the Alexa.com, has announced they are implementing “The New Alexa Rankings”.

For the most part, most of blogs in our network has increased in rank. For some, the stats have “tanked” to the bottom.

Although I am sure Alexa still needs some more beta testing and work to do, it seems like it is very unstable at this point.

We will need some more time for the dust to settle sorta similar to Entrecard’s new credit system.

Alexa will never be as accurate as “real” stats but at the same time, I believe they should provide the most accurate statistics as possible.

Let’s see what happens over the next couple days.

AdTech 2008 Video Interview – John Chow Shows you How to Make Money Online!

Quantity over Quality, that is the blogging question of the century!

There has been a lot of debate I have been seeing lately about quantity over quality in the amount of blogging and quality of our writing that we bloggers do.

To be fair, I did go over some posts by Darren over at Problogger.net. He is an accomplished problogger who is making a lot of money and does have some very good quality content. (in contrast, John Chow does not have as many quality posts, but he makes a lot of money so go figure)

If you look at Darren’s blog posts way back, he does mention that quantity is still important to be able to survive in the blogging world:

I’ve been blogging for 1053 days so that’s an average of 11.2 11.6 posts per day. When I started out (for the first year) my posting rate was much lower than this – the past 12 months have been something of a posting frenzy.

I will say at this point – that apart from a few reposted articles and duplicate postings (plus of course my guest bloggers work last month) these have all been hand written posts. I don’t use any automated posting system (I’m pretty anti them).

Then take a look at Darren’s post on how the Top 100 Technorati blogs are all posting 20-30 posts per day:

If you look at a lot top blogs going around, they do break many of the reasons that were given for people unsubscribing. This particularly is so for ‘too many posts’. For example - if you look at Technorati’s top 100 list you’ll find that the top 10 post an average of 20+ times per day (I’m taking those averages on what they’ve done so far today – so it’s probably higher). So obviously there’s some disconnect between the reasons that ProBlogger give as a reason to unsubscribe and what’s going on in the blogosphere.

There is clearly advantages to both posting a lot daily or posting less with focus on quality. But do understand quality isn’t everything. Sometimes, people “like” to skim most of your blog posts until one headline catches their eyes.

Here’s another excert from a blog post by a Aseem Kishore that guest blogged at Darren’s blog that caught my eye:

As you’ve probably heard a hundred times “Content is King”! I personally believe that this is true. Yes you have to do marketing, but in the end, if you have really good content, your blog will be read because others will market it for you. Eventually, I settled at two posts a day, which allows me to write a good quantity of posts, but at the same time maintain my standard of quality for each post.

You go look at his blog and look at some of his stats and how quickly he grew his blog, you will know what I mean. Aseem claims he’s making $100 from AdSense these days and it only took him 6 months!

I agree with his guest post that mimicking a fellow blogger (who is doing obviously well), is a very good idea and probably even better to take his advice too.

Here’s Aseem’s advice on to help you get that mimicking going:

Look at other blogs in your niche and see what is working and why. Mimic those characteristics.

Find the audience your blog is targeting and focus on that audience.

Create hard and fast goals that are within your control.

One of my friends, Mike from Bloggin-Ads.com, had a great post comparing quantity over quality comparing it to a gattling gun versus a sniper:

Quality over Quantity – if you’re a niche blogger, prioritizing quality over quantity is a must. It doesn’t matter how frequent you post (of course, must be a acceptable frequency! not once per year!!) if you post ‘em good. Remember, snipers don’t waste too many bullets to get something done. Accuracy of the shot and quality of the post is the key.

It’s true and I completely agree that blogging is the same. If you have lots of money to throw away, you can hire 30 bloggers to post 30+ daily “quality” posts, which is what the Top 100 bloggers in the world are doing.

But if you don’t have that money, you might be better off hiding in the bushes and sniping off your target one by one. The better the sniper you are, the better niche blogger you will be and blogged about.

In all, I think 3 to 5 blog posts per day is necessary in order for your blog to rise in popularity, crawled often by search engines like Google, and also provide enough information for people to browse through.

However, if you are blogging about something completely ‘niche’, some topics like “The Athlete’s Foot Blog”, then you might get away with 1 or 2 posts per day.

Above examples are simply for reference but in my experience, I have tried both gattling gun and the sniper method. The problems exists for both methods since the number of your daily posts increase, readers are less likely to comment and interact within the blog unless that readership is big like Engadget or ValleyWag.

On the other hand, sniping 1 post per day is not such a good idea since it only tells Google that your site is updated once per day. You need to let that Google robot crawler thingee that your blog is updated at least every couple hours, if not every hour.

So, the question is, how many posts per day do you blog and do you focus on quantity or quality?

I used to average 30+ blog posts over at Zedomax.com, which is what my blogger friend Phillip over at Makezine.com was doing. But I have settled down for less for quality, around 3 to5 posts, meaning I only try to post the “really funny or interesting” posts, not all the tech posts.
